gearoido Posted December 6, 2010 Share #6308 Posted December 6, 2010 Thanks Jan, One of the laborers who built that pass was my Grandfather's Cousin, Klondike Mike. He is more famous, or so he said, for carrying a piano on his back up Chilkoot Pass for some ladies in the "Entertainment" business who were on their way to Dawson. In any case, the following picture is of a small portion of a wildlife refuge. Behind the trees in the background is a famous river. Where are we, and what is the name of the refuge? doubice Posted December 7, 2010 Share #6309 Posted December 7, 2010 Gary, I hiked the Chilkoot Pass about 15 years ago and found remnants of many pianos, stoves and other heavy items discarded along the route over a century ago..... As to the famous river - haven't got a clue. Best, Jan
doubice Posted December 7, 2010 Share #6310 Posted December 7, 2010 Wouldn't be the Red River by any chance, would it? Best, Jan
gearoido Posted December 7, 2010 Share #6311 Posted December 7, 2010 I think the visual clues are woefully inadequate. So, to start - the area is surrounded on three sides by desert, or at the least very dry conditions. Many, many rattlesnakes can be found in the surrounding area. gearoido Posted December 7, 2010 Share #6312 Posted December 7, 2010 Wouldn't be the Red River by any chance, would it? Best, Jan Jan, Sorry I missed your try while I was typing. It is not close to the Red River. GaryO

gearoido Posted December 7, 2010 Share #6315 Posted December 7, 2010 Jan, I am sorry, but it is not anywhere in the four-corner States. Robert, No, not there, but you are getting closer As a hint I submit the following from a web site: "A portion of the refuge is accessible by boat... Most areas of the refuge are very remote with no restroom or drinking water facilities. There is no public drinking water available. Refuge visitors should plan their trips accordingly. Thousands of ducks and geese winter on the islands, and many different species rest here during spring and fall migration." GaryO
