Why no Digilux 3 around?

Looks like a solid cam - nobody using it?

Or the successor's around the corner?

Umm, what are you talking about? Plenty of us use them --- I just used mine tonight! If you don't see a lot of threads, its cause the camera's been around awhile now. Not many issues to discuss or debate.

There will likely not be a successor released by Leica. Leica appears to be out of the four-thirds market. They *might* enter the micro four-thirds market, but that's all speculation at this point; they've given no indication that they'll be offering a product in this segment.

Another happy user here. The camera never failed on me, not a single time. A solid workhorse is what it is. It's not a "real" digital Leica which is why some users have chosen to ignore or ridicule it. Those who have bought it are considered morons (by some) because they could have gotten the same deal, but cheaper, buying the Panasonic.

With the prevailing "mine is bigger" locker room attitude (I'm referring to sensor size here ;) you've just got to be a loser if you use and like the DL3.

Strangely it never achieved the cult status of the DL2 which, for all practical purposes, is much inferior (except for bulk and shutter noise). So the "mine is bigger" argument does not, I repeat NOT, apply to DL2. DL2 has that magic Leica glow, or so I'm led to believe.

Go figure.

There are quite a few forum members using the Digilux 3, and even more using the Panasonic equivalent, the DMC-L1. They are both fine camera's - they were just released into a market that had very tough competition at the time. At that stage the 4/3's platform was very new - thanks to Olympus with their E1 and E330 this changed. As far as I can recall from the reviews at the time, the only thing that was not up to the Canon/Nikon standard was the autofocus system. Personally I would love a Digilux 3 but am rather committed (financially that is) to the M8.

I use it and love it, have no intentions for the time being to buy into something else. Have an Olympus wide angle zoom (11-22) and the 25mm/F1.4 Summilux as well, and that's about all glass I ever will need. The images it takes are really good and I'm especially found of the all manual, traditional handling of the camera.

I'm going to steal a part of this thread ... appologies!

Hey, can you tell me some more about that 25mm? I'm thinking of buying one and read reviews, but a real life user somehow appeals more to my feelings.

I'd be interested in general handling and, of course, what the results are when shooting at 1.4. In short, is it worth it's money?

I have had my 25mm/F1.4 for about a week now and I am extremely happy with it. Its rather bulky, much larger than you would expect considering the focal length.

I don't know if it is because I wear glasses, but focusing with the viewfinder is very difficult with it since the narrow depth of field.

Furthermore, infinity starts really far away when it comes to the focusing range. Object you want in focus and that are located some 50m away must still be focused in if you want the object to be perfectly focused.

All this has made me starting using the live view when I have that lens mounted. I have turned on the 4x enlargement of the view when manually focusing to really see if I have the focus point where I want it. There is also a 10x enlargement view, but that's too detailed to me.

If the lens is worth the money? Yes, I believe so, if you want really sharp images even with F1.4. There is also a corresponding Sigma lens 30mm/F1.4, but I don't know much about it.

If I may comment on the 25mm, but the Olympus 2.8 version.

I've used the F1.4 and it is excellent, but I find more and more I am using the Olympus. It's less than 2cm thick, and with it the Digilux 3 becomes the size of an M camera with a compact 35 or 50mm.

A joy to carry around street shooting and very unobtrusive.
