jplomley Posted February 7, 2009 Author Share #21 Posted February 7, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) What gave you the idea that 35 mm film can't compete with the M8, 5DII or even the latest 25 MP DSLR? Exhaustive testing! A Creo, Cezanne, or drum scan of a 6x7 neg can compete very effectively. The same scanner on a 4x5 chrome leaves DSLRs in the dust. But 35mm struggles, even oil mounted drum scans, unless you shoot a low speed chrome film such as Velvia 50. The problem is not the resolution of film, its the noise. Grain noise and scanner noise (some of the later can be negated with multi-pass sampling). But film does have a unique look, and the flesh tones from Portra 160/400 NC are incredible. And what is particularly nice about the Portra films is that for color neg, they scan very well. And better yet, they convert to B&W nicely and demonstrate a very tight grain structure.
