bradreiman Posted October 20, 2006 Share #1 Posted October 20, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi folks. I am near the top of the list for an m8 in melbourne but am gonna be in LA in late november so I got on the list at number 21 (i think) at SAMYs in LA. My friend who shoots Canon is going to get the one in Australia as I have convinced him he must switch to Leica and he gets it. I'm going to get the new 28/2.8 and a 1.25 magnifier and probably some other stuff. Funny-I've never bought any Leica gear new except for 3 CV lenses. Mostly ebay and used camera stores (photographica in Copenhagen comes to mind). So 2 questions.....Anyone have any experience with SAMYs?...and Am I alone in being a first time "new" Leica purchaser with the M8? Seems really good for Leica's health that loads of people appear to be actually purchasing Leica gear "new" as opposed to used or "grey market". Also the price of the 28/2.8 is too tempting to pass up. Brilliant on Leicas part to bring new users into the fold. I really want the "cron" but will wait for the bank account to firm back up. Cheers....B
Advertisement Posted October 20, 2006 Posted October 20, 2006 Hi bradreiman, Take a look here SAMYs LA and buying Leica gear new.. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
mike prevette Posted October 20, 2006 Share #2 Posted October 20, 2006 The M8 will also be my first "New' Leica. I've owned 4 bodies, and bunches of lenses, but never new, fresh out of the box ones. Also Samy's is top notch. They have a few locations around LA but i believe the santa monica one is the original. And I also believe its still a family business. leicabug Posted October 21, 2006 Share #4 Posted October 21, 2006 I had bought my first Leicas from Samy, R6 plus a couple of R lenses. There are a few stores in southern California. The main store in L.A. also sells secondhand Leicas. Samy on certain weekends would offer no taxes on cameras and lenses, including Leicas. The tax rate here is 8.25%. That's a saving of almost $400 on a M8. Hopefully you will run into one of these when you are there. The chance is pretty good because November is near Thanksgiving and Chrismas holidays. everyman Posted October 21, 2006 Share #6 Posted October 21, 2006 B. Samy's is great. You are in good hands. I was just in Samy's today and bought a D-Lux 3. A very beautiful woman was waiting for me to finish my purchase and we got to talking. She said, "this is the best camera store, ever." So I am passing that on to you too. Samy's is a very reputable store and they'll treat you well. You don't have to worry.
robsteve Posted October 21, 2006 Share #7 Posted October 21, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Brad: Samy's is great. I have bought a lot of my gear from them and there has been nothing but good service and great prices.
wilfredo Posted October 21, 2006 Share #8 Posted October 21, 2006 I bought my M7 new at Samys in Orange County less than a year ago. I shop there regularly. I've had very good dealings with them. I'm not lining up for the M8. I'll wait and see what this $5000.00 baby will produce, before seriously considering it (maybe). I wonder how long it will take before they hit the used market on E-Bay? Please let us know how it goes and don't forget to post pictures. Cheers, Wilfredo+ Benitez-Rivera Photography
bradreiman Posted October 21, 2006 Author Share #9 Posted October 21, 2006 wow-rare to get all positive comments regarding a camera shop any more. glad to be in good hands as this is a really serious purchase for me. thanks for chiming in. also...i was in glazers camera shop in seattle this week and i must report a really good experience there as well. noticed a cosmetically cherry digilux 2 in there for 650.00usd, don't know the condition otherwise. bought a 35 nokton also at glazers. ivey's next door processed some velvia and apx for me and did a really outstanding job. mike prevette Posted October 21, 2006 Share #10 Posted October 21, 2006 Glazers is my home town photo store. I've always felt lucky to have them around. They are truely one of the finer camera stores around.
