kalina Posted January 23, 2009 Share #1 Posted January 23, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just got it today from Willoughby's. I ordered it on the 20th in the evening and got it today. Yayyy! Okay, for those who want to know... I angled the lens of both my LX3 and my D-Lux4 so my lamp could be see in the reflection of the lens. The LX3 lens is coated with something that's more blue. The D-Lux4 lens is more white. This is, I think, the opposite of what Ian Ho saw in his study of both cameras. Anyway, I LOVE my LX3 and decided to get the D-Lux4 to see what the rave was all about in terms of slightly better picture quality. I do mostly JPEG photography and am interested in the supposedly better algorithms in the D-Lux4. We'll see as I bring my new camera out to my parties. earleygallery Posted January 23, 2009 Share #5 Posted January 23, 2009 Congratulations on the new camera - interesting that your opinion of the coatings differs. I can only speak from what I've seen posted here in terms of comparative images, and they looked identical from both cameras, but I quite like the mystery and intrigue that persists about the 'differences' between the Leica and Panasonics. kalina Posted January 24, 2009 Author Share #8 Posted January 24, 2009 Okay, I'm not an expert with camera cases, but this one really is very nice. It's just not very practical as I said. Compared with, say, a quality leather purse, the stitching is just as top notch. It looks like a case you'd pay a lot of money for. The color is consistent throughout, the titanium color leather and there are just three metal fasteners, the two that hold the strap to the case and the one screw-in bolt that goes into the two parts of the case and into the tripod mount screw. There is also a magnet clasp that holds the outer cover to the inner part in place. I can't say I'll be using this case much since I bought a case from M-Rock for my LX3, but we'll see. It's weird, but I haven't been this enthused with a camera since opening my Nikon D300 in Dec 2008. Anywho, I'm selling my LX3 on ebay if anyone is interested. Actually, if anyone here wants to buy it, it's like new for $399 (the going price on ebay) which includes shipping. email me soon otherwise it'll go up on ebay this weekend. kalina Posted January 24, 2009 Author Share #11 Posted January 24, 2009 Actually, I've taken a bunch of pics with my LX3, so here are some of them. It's part of my "clublife" series. All were done in the awesome Dynamic B&W mode. The pics, in order, are called: Sip Kristin Self-Portrait Folded The Bottle Welcome, dear visitor! gkolluri Posted January 24, 2009 Share #12 Posted January 24, 2009 I agree, the case is a bit cumbersome when you want to open it quickly and take a pic. Also, to me the case is more of a gray color. But I like it nevertheless. I find that I may need the vertical hand grip, but wont be able to use the case with it.
firoze Posted January 24, 2009 Share #13 Posted January 24, 2009 I will try to post some pics tonight!I feel the case is a little cumbersome to use. It's got a neat design, though. Kalina, thank you very much for posting these detailed pics of the case. The case looks beautifully made but as you say does not seem very practical to use. Also, it looks like it is not possible to carry the camera in the case without screwing it in. Id like to use the camera without it being attached to the case, that does not seem possible here... am I right? Wonderful B&W pics from the LX-3.. do keep posting more... Id like to use the camera without it being attached to the case, that does not seem possible here... am I right? Wonderful B&W pics from the LX-3.. do keep posting more... Regards Thanks firoze! Yes, just as Glenn said, you need to keep the thumb screw in place to use the case, but the case comes in two pieces and the screw goes through both and into the tripod screw. You could remove the screw that holds the two pieces, remove the top piece, and rescrew the screw into the bottom piece and into the camera. You can't do this easily while walking so that's why this is a really impractical case. Also, the leather strap is such that you have to hold it down and pressed against the sides of the case if you did want to keep both pieces of the case screwed onto the camera. I suppose I'd have to get used to it. I think the case was meant more for travel than actual field use. I can't see whipping out my camera at a moment's notice with that case. You do get a suede drawstring sack with the case that might prove to be an effective case in itself. It surely beats the soft velour drawstring sack I was using with my LX3 before I got my M-Rock case. The drawstring sack came with my Sanyo Xacti HD1000. kalina Posted January 24, 2009 Author Share #16 Posted January 24, 2009 I wanted to point out that my LX3 pics were adjusted very slightly in Photoshop. A few of the pics I upped the contrast range from 0 to 255 to 0 to about 250 and then I did two applications of Smart Sharpen 25% at a radius of 1.0. firoze Posted January 24, 2009 Share #17 Posted January 24, 2009 Thanks for the info Kalina. Did you say the Titanium came with a voucher for a free case, in addition to the gray case that it already came with? Does that mean you could get one of the standard DL4 cases (Brown or Black) with that voucher?
bono0272 Posted January 25, 2009 Share #18 Posted January 25, 2009 Thanks for the info Kalina. Did you say the Titanium came with a voucher for a free case, in addition to the gray case that it already came with? Does that mean you could get one of the standard DL4 cases (Brown or Black) with that voucher? I just brought a D-Lux 4 (standard) yesterday in Hong Kong and it came with the original leather case (I chose the brown one) free of charge and no vocher was needed. Glenn Ah that's interesting, I've always wanted a nice case to carry a spare battery and SD card with my DL 3 but never found one that matched the brown Leica DL3 case.... Have you got this case yet? I can find no mention of it on the Leica website, would be interesting to see what it looks like.
