Blown Out Images On MacBook Pro

Images, my own and from the internet, are recently appearing blown out on my screen even though they have good histograms and print OK.

I've recently updated to OS 10.5.6, but not sure if this problem exactly coinsides with the update. I've heard there are various problems with the update. Does anyone know about this, and the solution?

I also sometimes use a Cinema display which I've calibrated. Could the Cinema display calibration be messing up the MacBook Pro display?

Thanks for any help.

Best,

Mitchell

Hi Mitchell,

Sorry to hear about your problems with your Mac. Quick question, how did you do the calibration of your monitor. There are various ways of doing this - there is a quick and nasty way of doing it by using the built in Apple feature where you then move the sliders around. The other alternative is by getting a color calibration system - I use Pantone Huey Pro for doing mine.

I am not sure how you have connected your Cinema display to your Macbook Pro - I presume via the DVI connector. Remember that you have to run color calibration for each display that you have on your computer. Your main LCD screen will use different settings to that of an external display. I use a 19" Samsung SyncMaster external monitor on my Macbook Pro and had to set up both displays separately from each other. The instructions that come with the Pantone product are self explanatory and excellent.

Hope this helps you.

Hi Mitchell,

I'm using the same setup you're using and not having any color issues. I would say that the profile for your display was changed when you updated the OS or it corrupt. You can very easily check this by going to display preferences and checking the profile and the brightness slider. There you can also do a simple calibration at least to get you display at a happy place following the on screen directions.

Andreas and MV8,

Presto!!!!! Problem's gone.

Thanks so much. I went to Display Preferences and found the old Color LCD Profile.

It also made the drop down menus solid instead of annoyingly transparent.

That's really great!

I now have to figure out how to make both the Cinema and Macbook screen profiles work when I use both displays, but maybe I'm on the right track.

Best,

Mitchell

Hi Mitchell,

It's quite easy to have different profiles running for different displays at the same time. Connect your Cinema Display and switch on as usual. In your Systems Preferences, select the Display option (as you did before). You will see that on your external display you now also have a setup screen. Click on the Color tab at the top and select the profile that best suits the display. Then just quit your Systems Preferences on your main screen, and your done.

Hope this helps

Mitchell:

I have found that the profiles are sometimes not applied when coming out of the sleep or suspend mode. I will get odd colors like you describe. I found if I just start the display prefference application, the displays pop back to normal. I think this was related to one of the last tow OSx updates.

I use a MacBook pro with a 24" cinema display and have both displays calibrated and active.

Thanks Andreas and Steve. I'll do it.

Without tech savvy and generous souls like you on various forums, I really don't know here I'd be. Not shooting nearly as many pictures and not doing it nearly as well, but, oh yeah, my bank account might be a lot bigger. :)

But, great thanks again. My technical ignorance makes me a taker here. Hooray for all the givers.

Best,

Mitchell
