elansprint72 Posted October 19, 2006 Share #1 Posted October 19, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just seen this mooted elsewhere, is there a need for it? I use the LUG gallery, is that some sort of "rival organisation"? Just never occurred to me that there was a need for duplication. I am not a part of LUG, other than as a gallery user, btw. Cheers, Pete.
Advertisement Posted October 19, 2006 Posted October 19, 2006 Hi elansprint72, Take a look here Why a Leica Camera User Gallery?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
rob_x2004 Posted October 19, 2006 Share #2 Posted October 19, 2006 Can't see the point really. Got the forums. If someone wants a gallery I kind of think maybe they should RENT SPACE and pay for a place to safely put their images beyond the clutches of anyone who would comment amend their works of art. At the moment this is free to air, informal, relatively polite and informed. Seems to work ok. Do we need another division? I kind of think it would be one or the other, galleries or picture forums, rather than both. Regards.
jmr Posted October 19, 2006 Share #3 Posted October 19, 2006 Things do seem to work pretty well as they are; perhaps we shouldn't try to fix it.
abrewer Posted October 19, 2006 Share #4 Posted October 19, 2006 Well, since I am the scoundrel that brought it up...! I'm probably not speaking out of turn to say that Andreas has a lot of different ideas that were passed along to him over the last months and a gallery for members here was one of them. I also have my pictures in a gallery at the LUG, and probably wouldn't move all of them (1600+ pictures! Yikes, where has my life gone???) to a gallery here, but as part of a package of features that aren't available elsewhere I might be interested. It's always Andreas' call...he is the boss here. But it is something I personally favor. Thanks. Allan
lambroving Posted October 20, 2006 Share #5 Posted October 20, 2006 Allan, I'd like to see a gallery over here if we are going to be stuck with this software. We ought at least to take advantage of this built-in facility, just as long as it can be configured to display the images decently. We no longer have access to everything I posted in the old Forum and it would be easier to link to a shot to illustrate a point in a thread as we used to. Don't like the new LUG Gallery software either. My pictures don't display as well as they did, same at this site vs. the old Forum. As there are thumbnails, just make sure the posting limits are raised to 500K!!!
abrewer Posted October 20, 2006 Share #6 Posted October 20, 2006 Hi William! You don't like the new look over at the LUG Gallery? I kind of like it. It's got a lot of new features, too, like the full-size file upload/download. I put some 4MB images up there Monday for someone to download onto their computer and edit for themselves. Very convenient--much faster than making a CD for them and handing it off personally. Thanks. Allan
lambroving Posted October 20, 2006 Share #7 Posted October 20, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Allan, My pictures don't display as well as they did. Simple as that, and the software is far from intuitive. SURE it has gimmicks, just like this vBulletin software which A LOT of us don't like. I KNOW YOU like gimmicks. You did WHAT?! Loading up Brian's sever because someone has a tiny mailbox???!!! Call me on Skype about another matter if you are still online.
abrewer Posted October 20, 2006 Share #8 Posted October 20, 2006 You did WHAT?! Loading up Brian's sever because someone has a tiny mailbox???!!! LOL! Yes, I did that. I think each subscriber has about two gigs of space alotted...I'll have to look at it next time I upload. It gives you a message about how much you're using and how much you've got left. Turn on your Skype now! Damn! Where'd I put those batteries??? Thanks. Allan
andybarton Posted October 20, 2006 Share #9 Posted October 20, 2006 Allan, I'd like to see a gallery over here if we are going to be stuck with this software. We ought at least to take advantage of this built-in facility, just as long as it can be configured to display the images decently. Don't like the new LUG Gallery software either. My pictures don't display as well as they did, same at this site vs. the old Forum. As there are thumbnails, just make sure the posting limits are raised to 500K!!! Who's going to pay for the additional hosting load that this would create? Also bear in mind that for many people, the images displayed in their current form are too large to be seen on their screens without scrolling, so 500k might not actually offer much of an advantage. I can't see the software being changed, again, in any foreseeable time frame, so I'm afraid that those who don't like it are just going to have to lump it. I agree with Rob to be honest. If you want to control how your shots are displayed, without relying on others, you have to set up your own gallery. It's not expensive, and it's not difficult. The software I use to set mine up is freeware and gives, I think, a pretty reasonable page. If you want a particular grey background, or particular frames round your shots, then it's the only way to go. As a for instance, www.lambroving.com is currently available to buy (It will cost you about $10 per year) and sufficient webspace will cost you around $10 per month. You then have complete control. Got to be worth thinking about if both the places where you currently show your work don't provide you with what you want. BTW, the link to your LUG gallery is broken in your Profile. rob_x2004 Posted October 20, 2006 Share #10 Posted October 20, 2006 Actually I am not sure lambroving dot net dot com is still available. There are a number of web addresses I have invested in and am going to start up sites featuring crochet, embroidery or stamp collecting unless I can sell them on for twelve dollars fifty. Andy, you do follow Celtic and belt out macrame don't you! Thirteen bucks!
stunsworth Posted October 20, 2006 Share #11 Posted October 20, 2006 And who's to say that any gallery provided will satisfy M Angneau? As Andy says, if you want the sort of control you seem to be demanding the best bet is to set up your own gallery. Even if you don't want to pay for the privilige through having your own domain you may find that your internet account has free storage associated with it. You do seem to be getting a bit hissy about something that's provided for free.
abrewer Posted October 21, 2006 Share #12 Posted October 21, 2006 William, I know you're not a geek, and if you need someone to give you a hand setting up your own site I'm very happy to help out. It is pretty simple, and the Gallery software Andy uses is just like what they use on the LUG. I'm sure we can find a skin for you that you'd like for your pictures. I'm using a service from .Mac now (link below) that is quite reliable and fast. It costs me about a $100 a year--comparable to what you'd pay anyone to host your site. Thanks. lambroving Posted October 21, 2006 Share #13 Posted October 21, 2006 Andy & Allan, Thanks for your suggestions and you'll be the first to know when I decide to become a web developer... Computers to me are all about work and communication and nothing whatever to do with pleasure. Steve, In you humble opinion, no doubt. Just in case you have not yet worked this out, NOTHING is free, including this site. While I may be more vocal than some, I'm far from alone in my opinions of THIS site. I'll refrain from posting excerpts from the private mail I receive. Those I can provide to the owners of this site at the appropriate time. Time for a couple of SERIOUS polls IMHO. You exaggerate, again, and I know you better: you like surfing the net and killing time here as much as the rest of us do. Ron has his pictures on dot-Mac also, if I recall correctly last time I was on his site. It is really simple to set it up, regardless of whether you use a Mac or a PC. Thanks. SURF???!!! You've been at the ether again, either that or writing your own perscriptions!!! This month I only have time to look in here when I'm having dinner or reading my private mail... rob_x2004 Posted October 21, 2006 Share #17 Posted October 21, 2006 We all transcend the eathers, communicate the void across the net. Just don't write off the Pradovit. William has a point. Big one.

If you can use a browser, you can set up a simple website. I am not a web developer, but I did it in about an hour from start to finish. Not quite sre why you're here if you get no pleasure from it This site is free at the point of use, to anyone. If support comes from Leica, it comes out of a marketing budget that would be spent elsewhere if not here (so, OK, there's an opportunity cost), but no one has asked you to pay anything towards its upkeep. You don't even have to take any notice of the advertising if you choose not to. I haven't seen many other complaints about this site. Perhaps if all these people to whom you refer emailed Andreas and not you, that might be helpful. If you want a Poll to be set up, ask any moderator, or Andreas, and we will see what we can do on your behalf, if the basis of the poll is agreed with. Those I can provide to the owners of this site at the appropriate time. When we had the test drive of the software I seem to remember the majority of people thought it was an improvement, as did I, and I still do. Of course I was expressing my opinion. I don't believe I have exclusive access to the truth. And believe it or not I like to hear other people's opinions even when I disagree with them. As Andy says the budget for this site more than likely comes from a marketing budget that would otherwise be spent elsewhere. In the case of the Lug gallery it is funded by Brian. So, as you say nothing is free; the point I was atempting to make is that its cost to YOU is zero, a litle more generosity on your part would not be out of order. In my opinion of course.
