A magazine with good pictures?

It's easy to find collections of old, good pictures. But how to keep up with contemporary stuff? Can you recommend a good quality magazine which appreciates nice pictures? Text can be completely secondary. I love good articles too, but they're much easier to find than proper photos. I had photojournalism first in mind, but I like all kinds of photography. My favorite photographers include Sally Mann, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Jeanloup Sieff, Mario Testino, Pentti Sammallahti, Philippe Halsman, Elliot Erwitt and Helmut Newton among others.

It would be a plus if I could also order it home to Finland, maybe also cost considered...

Hello Finnkare, there is one magazine that I bought in Luxembourg last summer that I really liked a lot. I bought n° 2 of " polka magazine ". It is mostly about photos, lots of photos in it. In the n° 2 ( juin/august) edition there were articles and photos of Eric Valli, James Nachtwey, David Alan Harvey, Vanessa Winship, Willy Rizzo, Don McCullin, Gilles Caron. The text is in French. You can contact them at Polka Magazine, 27 rue Jasmin, 75016 Paris.

Polka Galerie contact@polkaimage.com good luck, Etienne.

Without hesitation, Arizona Highways. Superb landscape photography -- and some people and travel photography. Large format and digital. Ansel Adams used to contribute! Interesting stories, too. And commentary on photography. Arizona Highways Magazine - Scenic Arizona Photography, Arizona Maps, Arizona Souvenirs

BJP (the British Journal of Photography) is worth a look. It's a weekly with a mix of news, reviews and photographs (2 or 3 featured photographers each week, including commercial, PJ and art), not too expensive and (IMHO) not too far up itself.

There's a subscription-only website British Journal of Photography – professional photography news, camera reviews, images, exhibits, photos with a free trial.

Thank you very much for your recommendations!

Some very brief very personal opinions based on the website:

Polka: amazing, almost just the kind of stuff I was looking for. I really regret knowing only very little French. I think I'm gonna order it (if possible) and save the numbers for later reading when I have learned enough French. I don't consider learning languages as "trouble" anyway. Until that I can bother my wife who knows French :).

Wallpaper: some nice works, but maybe too commercial.

Lenswork: very nice, but quite old-fashioned, maybe too concentrated on tight portraits, landscapes and abstractions. Duotone is nice, but maybe not what I'm looking for.

Arizona highways: a little too concentrated on landscapes and only one place in the world.

British journal of photography: a bit too technical, I need a more concentrated touch on pictures and articles around them. There's too much happening on the layout, too.

Hi Kare,

It's not a magazine but there is a very interesting BBC series on youtube

YouTube - The Genius of Photography ep1 pt1

up to ep6 pt6 is over 6 hours of information about photography and photographers

More on Helmut Newton can be found here:

YouTube - Helmut Newton - Mein Leben [My Life] part 1

part 1 to 5

Henri Cartier-Bresson:

YouTube - The Impassioned Eye - 1 of 10

Annie Liebowitz:

Hope this is some help.

regards

Ruben

For magazines about contemporary photography try:

Hotshoe International

Source

Portfolio

Foto8

Photoworks

Hotshoe is like the BJP without the technical articles, Photoworks and Foto8 only come out a couple of times a year. Portfolio is expensive.

But, if you want to see what documentary and art photographers do nowadays, these are the titles you should be looking at (in the UK at least).

All of them have web sites.

Thanks again for further recommendations.

B&W is available here. I think it's a bit messy, and I really don't understand the print quality. It's odd that the magazine is marketed as a fine art b&w publication...

Private seems quite interesting, but is it also only in black and white?

LFI: I think I get enough Leica-mania from this forum... ;)

Hotshoe, Source, Portfolio and Photoworks all seem a bit too artsy. The websites of the first two are almost useless for evaluating, though. No access to any pics.

Foto8 is nice, but I might have a chance to read it in a library I know... Especially since it comes out so seldomly.

Blimey, you're a hard one to please!

Forget magazines then, try visiting galleries, student art shows etc., if not in person then 'on line'.

Damn, I don't wanna seem too picky... :) I don't know if i'm taking this magazine ordering too seriously. And I'm happy if somebody else gets interested in some other magazine, even though I wouldn't. Of course it's a matter of personal preference.

But as I said, Polka seems marvellous, and Foto8 also very interesting. Private and Lenswork are ok, but color-limited.
