marknorton Posted October 20, 2006 Share #21 Posted October 20, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks for the link but I am a bit shocked: my Sandisk Extreme III 2 Gig cards are not on the list I don't think that being absent from the list means they will not work, more likely, they haven't been tested yet. Advertisement Posted October 20, 2006 Posted October 20, 2006 Hi marknorton, Take a look here Compatible SD Memory Cards for the LEICA M8. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
waterlenz Posted October 21, 2006 Share #22 Posted October 21, 2006 'Only' ..... think about it for a second. It used to be only 36 exposures. So unless your files are 55MB each or your card is real low capacity, you're going to get a lot more onto a card than you did a roll. The only problem I see is the one a shooter will have when a 4Gb card dies. I had a 256MB card die on me a coupple of years ago it was full of wedding shots taken with my D2. Not a pleasent experience even if I was able to recover most of the files. I'll never buy anything from TwinMOS again. Thats not to say that a Sandisk, Panasonic or Lexar card can't fail too, it's just that I don't trust TwinMOS (regardless of who made the actual chip). Hatch your bets gentlemen and use more than one card, data loss will happen. - Carl I agree that one should not have all ones eggs in a basket. I have at least two CF card in sizes ranging from 512MG to 4GB for my 'other' brand dSLRs. The 4GB cards get used the most and have been filled up on some shoots. I do a fair amount of underwater photography for which I use 4GB with the D2H/D2X and 2GB with the D1X. It is impossible to re-load during a dive. It is also nice not to have to re-load between dives, reduces the chance for a catastrophic leak. Even a small leak will be catastrophic!! I have also done shoots standing in boots in shallow seawater - nice not to have to be swapping out things. One drop and your item is toast. Just imagine dropping that M8 bottom.... Get 2 or 4 GB cards!!!
waterlenz Posted October 21, 2006 Share #23 Posted October 21, 2006 The D1X is how old? Circa 2001 perhaps? Leica is resistant to change but comparing the brand new M8 to the nearly six year old D1X is a little extreme. Yes, the possibility is there for incompatibilities but I think Leica will come through in the end for us. The M8 will be that old too one day. It may already be locked in to old SD card technology, like the D1x was. That was my point. In spite of memory and firmware updates, the D1x is not able to use the newer larger capacity cards. I would like to see a statement from Leica that the M8 was SDHC compliant. This would be much more useful than this card 'test'.
waterlenz Posted October 21, 2006 Share #24 Posted October 21, 2006 I don't think that being absent from the list means they will not work, more likely, they haven't been tested yet. Omission of a particular card is ambiguous. Thus the card test is bogus. We need to know the failures too.
truando Posted October 21, 2006 Share #25 Posted October 21, 2006 Thanks for the link but I am a bit shocked: my Sandisk Extreme III 2 Gig cards are not on the list not true, they just didn't repeat the "Extreme III" part. It's on the list.
mhoutman Posted October 22, 2006 Share #26 Posted October 22, 2006 not true, they just didn't repeat the "Extreme III" part. It's on the list. for the other brands they did "repeat" .... well let's just wait
pascal_meheut Posted October 31, 2006 Share #27 Posted October 31, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) BTW, my Transcend 150x are working perfectly in my M8. Guy can be reassured.
neelin Posted December 29, 2006 Share #28 Posted December 29, 2006 FWIW for those in North America looking for cards readily available this side of the pond. I have 2 of these 4gb cards working with my M8. Transcend TS4GSD150 p.s. am I the only one who whenever they see "lifetime warranty" think of the joke about the heart surgeon answering the concerned patient's question, "Is there any sort of warranty that comes with the artificial heart?" Stevez4 Posted December 29, 2006 Share #29 Posted December 29, 2006 I don't think that being absent from the list means they will not work, more likely, they haven't been tested yet. My Extre III card works in the M-8 very well but was not recognized by my Lexar Readers. Oh, I use a mac and had never had an unrecognized SD card before. Fortunitely an old Zio reader worked fine. Its just very slow.
4season Posted December 29, 2006 Share #30 Posted December 29, 2006 Finding M8-compatible SD cards (not SDHC!) larger than 2 gigabytes may be kind of hit-or-miss because it's a non-standard. Secure Digital card - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Devices that do not specifically support SD2.0/SDHC do not recognize SDHC memory cards. Some manufacturers have produced 4GB SD cards that do not conform to the SD2.0/SDHC and are incompatible with existing SD devices, and are also incompatible with SDHC devices[citation needed]. As of late 2006, the simultaneous availability of non-standard 4GB SD and 4GB SDHC cards, and the incompatibilities between SD and SDHC have caused a great deal of confusion among consumers looking to buy memory for various devices. Transcend 150X 2GB cards work great BTW.
mwilliamsphotography Posted December 29, 2006 Share #31 Posted December 29, 2006 SanDisk 4GBHC do not work in the M8. The ones being sold on the B&H site do not mention they are HC. I bought 2 of them and now have to return them. They wouldn't work in my 1DsMKII SD slot either.
Mark_Schretlen Posted December 30, 2006 Share #32 Posted December 30, 2006 Canon released new firmware for your 1Ds2 just before Christmas that is supposed to make the SD slot SDHC compatible. Canon issues new firmware for three DSLRs: Digital Photography Review Perhaps Solms will do the same eventually.
mwilliamsphotography Posted December 30, 2006 Share #33 Posted December 30, 2006 Thanks Mark. New firmware now loaded. SOAB !!! I returned the 4 gig SDHC cards to B&H yesterday afternoon ! I use the dual CF/SD slots on the Canon when shooting weddings, and it's a big PITA to swap out 2 gig cards ... 4 gig dual card shooting would be so much better. Hey LEICA! WAKE UP !!!!! Why wouldn't a brand new camera that's dependent on SD cards not have firmware to accommodate the higher capacity SDHC media?????? When shooting RAW at a wedding I blow through a 2 gig card pretty quickly. I NEED 4 gig SDs.

I like the reader that comes with it. Maybe the next firmware update

neila Posted January 4, 2007 Share #36 Posted January 4, 2007 I picked up my new M8 this very afternoon - so new that it's in its box and the battery is charging up. The shop sold me a Panasonic 4GB SDHC card to go with the camera - but my card reader (the one that plugs into my computer via USB) can't see it for some reason. Nor is the Panasonic listed as being compatible on the Leica site.... Hmmmm! Hopefully it'll work in the camera. EDIT: By coincidence, my dealer has just phoned me to say that there may be issues with the Panasonic card and that I should return it.
msadat Posted January 4, 2007 Share #37 Posted January 4, 2007 i have been using the regualr 4gb sd card 150x transcend bought from mydigitsldiscount.com in m8 and dmr from the very begining with no problems or issues. have not tried any of the new sdhc cards in either camera. I'm sitting on 10 2gb Transcend 150x cards . Not even a mention for them. Hmmm Been here before:D
Guest guy_mancuso Posted January 4, 2007 Share #38 Posted January 4, 2007 I'm sitting here waiting for Fed-X right now to deliver the card , leaving for LA for 13 days on a convention and shoot. i feel like I am moving out of my home. have all my shooting gear including lights and even my mac pro and 30 inch display plus all my cloths. Maybe my wife kicked me out and don't know it. LOL
woodyspedden Posted January 4, 2007 Share #39 Posted January 4, 2007 Interesting -- nothing bigger than 2GB. Guess we'll wait for the tasters. Bill Although not on Leica's approved list, I use the Transcend 4GB 150X with no problems. The only glitch is that it doesn't show up with a name when looking at "My Computer". I have to hunt through the list of removable drives until I find it. This of course is on a PC. On the MacBook Pro the drive mounts and the identification is "No Name". On either machine when the folder is opened all the images are there. No problems and I have probably shot one thousand or more images since i got the camera on Nov 7th. carstenw Posted January 4, 2007 Share #40 Posted January 4, 2007 not true, they just didn't repeat the "Extreme III" part. It's on the list. Take another look. The sequence is plain, Ultra, Extreme, plain, Ultra etc. The Extreme III 2 GB is not listed. I have such a card and it seems to work fine.
