chrism Posted October 24, 2006 Share #101 Posted October 24, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Sean, A question, please, about the JFI B&W profiles used in C1, that you mention in your review. I have them and have installed them in the right place in my system. Using C1 LE the only way I can make each one apply to the image is to go to the app's preferences and select it as the default profile for the camera, close the prefs and reload the raw file. This is very cumbersome, and makes it hard to compare one against another. Am I being stupid and missing something, or is it easier in C1 Pro? I have used ACR until now, but am experimenting with C1 in preparation for the big day...... Chris

Chris Here's how I play with them (using C1 3.7.5 on PC). I click on workflow > show color mgmt settings. This brings down a dialog in which you can choose camera profiles. Switching profiles in this box while one thumbnail is selected changes the preview, showing the effect of each profile without closing the dialog box. chrism Posted October 24, 2006 Share #104 Posted October 24, 2006 I'm using Mac OS X, with 3.7.5 LE. I think the equivalent for me is to open the Preferences, select that for Color Management, and change the default profile for the camera. The thumbnail and the larger view of the open raw file don't change though until either I do something to make the image refresh (eg click on the magnifying glass and click on the image to enlarge it, or click outside the thumnail and then click it again to reload the main window). Then I have to select Preferences etc all over again to change it once more. Not so easy as using some B&W presets in ACR, where they are all available in a drop-down menu! sean_reid Posted October 24, 2006 Author Share #105 Posted October 24, 2006 Hi Sean: 1) Say, do you eat benzedrine for breakfast, or what? How do find time to shoot pix, write the reviews, deal with Leica and the other manufacturers, ride motorcycles, read photo/art books, and have a professional photography business? Oh, and a private life when you're not answering forum posts? 2) I do have a speculative question: do you think Leica is planning a 28mm Summilux? With the 1.33x problem, my normal lens for the last 30 years (35mm Summilux) now becomes too long. Plus, the new 28mm f2.8 is slower, for Chrissakes!. I know it was designed for the entry level lens, pricewise, and is supposedly the "pancake" lens (always thought that was a stupid term, BTW). But shouldn't a fast wide/normal lens be a priority, since vibration reduction technology is pretty much impossible/improbable in a manual focusing, front-end diaphram lens, for low-light photography? Love your reviews and forum postings, Sean. I suppose it would sound superfluous to say "keep up the good work". 1) It's a good question. No drugs involved but I basically am going on about 4 hours of sleep per night right now and that can't go on too long. Two of my clients who are expecting finished work have been cool about getting their files a bit later then planned. The motorcycle touring company (which is a huge thing on it's own) is quietly for sale because I can't keep doing everything. I also have a wife and two young daughters. In short, I use a lot of energy right now. Once NMT sells, things should settle down a bit. 2) I suggested two lenses to Leica: a 28/1.4 and a 24/2.0. Neither one is easy to make without being huge but we'll see. Thanks very much for the thoughts. Cheers, Sean
sean_reid Posted October 24, 2006 Author Share #106 Posted October 24, 2006 i think i would be happy if i could use an M8 file to make 16x20 color prints that were of extremely high quality, that would be really great. when i get drum scans made from 35mm slides i feel most comfortable with the image quality at 11x14 print size, and usually associate high quality 16x20 prints with medium format cameras. i think that's why i was really intrigued by the medium format angle of the review, especially when comparing the size of the M8 to a medium format rangefinder camera like the Mamiya 7. kevin Hi Kevin, I think 16 x 20 will be no problem from the M8 files. Chris I don't know about LE but in Pro I right click on the "Color Management Settings" icon and select the profile from there. It's very easy. chrism Posted October 24, 2006 Share #109 Posted October 24, 2006 Thank you gentlemen. When I see the results from C1 LE I'll have to decide if the Pro version is worth the price. Chris
