nikau Posted October 19, 2006 Share #1 Posted October 19, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) What's the story with the current 50mm f2.8 Elmar on the M8? The M8 instruction book, which I downloaded as a pdf, says: "Lenses with retractable tubes can only be used with their tubes extended ..." or damage may be caused. Yet, it is included in Leica's list of lenses suitable for 6-bit coding. I'd love to use the Elmar with an M8, but not if I have to Dymo-tape the barrel to stop it retracting. Does anyone know for sure whether this lens is one that will or will not cause damage?
Advertisement Posted October 19, 2006 Posted October 19, 2006 Hi nikau, Take a look here 50mm Elmar on M8. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wattsy Posted October 19, 2006 Share #2 Posted October 19, 2006 There is already a recently active thread about this issue which is worth looking at. It seems that Leica have to be taken at their word on this and this lens shouldn't be collapsed whilst fitted to the M8. I had this lens a couple of years ago and seem to remember that, when retracted, it would just touch the metal frame in front of the shutter curtain on my M7 (at least it seemed to touch something). I wouldn't want to risk retracting this lens on an M8.

marknorton Posted October 19, 2006 Share #4 Posted October 19, 2006 I've sent an email to Leica suggesting they provide a retro-fit collar around the chrome barrel to prevent the lens being pushed too far back.

marknorton Posted October 30, 2006 Share #7 Posted October 30, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Had a helpful reply back from my contact in Customer Service who has said he will pass the suggestion on the people responsible. He also mentioned in passing that "it was a great Photokina for us". As if we didn't know!

doubice Posted October 30, 2006 Share #9 Posted October 30, 2006 I've sent an email to Leica suggesting they provide a retro-fit collar around the chrome barrel to prevent the lens being pushed too far back. The M5 and the CL had the same problem - lenses could not be collapsed because they'd hit the meter arm. At that time, Leitz provided information about 'homemade' collars from Dymo label tape, which could be taped on the tubus of collapsible lenses to prevent them from being fully collapsed. I am quite sure same could be done today, as long as one could find the Dymo tape somewhere..... Jan
el fotografo Posted October 31, 2006 Share #10 Posted October 31, 2006 I have an M5 and the current elmar and I made collars out of 1" diameter clear plastic flexible tubing I bought at my local hardware store. I cut a 3/4" long ring to fit the barrel of the lens while extended and sliced the ring open so I could slip it on to the barrel. Since the tubing is clear its un-noticable and I can slip it off to be able to retract the lens on other M bodies. Works great.
