rsolomon Posted October 19, 2006 Share #1 Posted October 19, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) just curious -- as we know and understand the # of mpixels does not tell the whole story of a camera i do find it a bit odd that EVERY digital camera in the leica portfollio has 10 m pixels except the Digilux-3. is this somehow realted to the 4/3 's standard ? Advertisement Posted October 19, 2006 Posted October 19, 2006 Hi rsolomon, Take a look here Digilux 3 is it short on mpixels @ 7.5 ?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Riley Posted October 19, 2006 Share #2 Posted October 19, 2006 my feeling is they did that to keep the noise down and it compares with pro quality Mp range on other brands, Canon/Nikon my opinion, but M8 is really a new generation of digital, with the 1.3 crop on a CCD Riley
wattsy Posted October 19, 2006 Share #3 Posted October 19, 2006 To be fair to Leica they just have to go with whatever Panasonic are using. The choice of the smallest sensors is probably more heavily influenced by marketing - the typical user being unlikely to notice that whatever theoretical gains are made by the extra megapixels ends up lost by the extra noise 'cleaning' required. marknorton Posted October 19, 2006 Share #4 Posted October 19, 2006 The mill-stone around the neck of the digital camera industry is megapixels and people who don't know any better thinking that because it's got zillions of the things, it must be better. How can I possibly look someone in the eye and admit I've only got 7.5 of the things, whatever they are? It's a bit like the brain-dead discussing cars and that because their car does 0-60 in so much time, it has got to be better than your AMC Pacer, right? OTOH, they may be right in this instance. The D2 with its "meagre" 5MP, is a revelation for producing image quality beyond what the pundits would have you expect. Pixels are things you need to have enough of but there may not be benefits of having more. Low noise and colour depth matter more in the finish. rsh Posted October 19, 2006 Share #5 Posted October 19, 2006 I had a D2 for over two years and it was a wonderful camera. I had no problem with 11x14 prints from a 5 mp sensor. I supect the D3 will be even better because the sensor is larger. I sold it because I am putting the money into the M8 and I plan to get a D3 at some point.
