Decidedly unpopular, especially when realized to be true in hindsight  Also, I think, many people do not, or do not want to, believe that their camera keeps electrical current running when switched off. Like in a Canon DSLR which, when switched off, still recognizes a new card being placed, by flashing a red light.  I now found evidence that the M8 is no different: see here, highlighted on page 99 of the M8.2 manual: Welcome, dear visitor! Having been reading this forum for some months and knowing what I do now, I would undoubtly be more cautious in similar circumstances. But the camera had arrived a few days earlier in the week and I was itching to try it out. This was my first opportunity and some falling snow was not going to stop me! Â I did not totally throw caution to the wind and kept the camera in a bag, only taking it out when I wanted to shoot. It seems to have survived the ordeal. I'm embarrassed to admit that I still chickened out and did _not_ end up using the M8 ... It's just me being risk averse and babying the camera. Â I used a D-Lux 4 instead, which kind of worked out anyway for a totally different reason - I was traveling with family, and frequently found myself only having time for quick P&S snaps.
