Marquinius Posted January 9, 2009 Share #3 Posted January 9, 2009 Ben, Composition: 10 out of 10, really like it. HCB did this kind of thing: you're part of the crowd and looking over shulders at what's up. But ... the dramatic sky distracts somewhat. I like it for the quality of itself, but here ... perhaps lighten up a little. Not much. Ah, but that's me nagging and sweating over DPP-books Marco
stuny Posted January 9, 2009 Share #4 Posted January 9, 2009 Ben - The sky makes me think of the sky over the old customs house as the evil was amassing in Ghostbusters 2. Exquisite composition, detail, depth and processing.
Bo_Lorentzen Posted January 9, 2009 Share #5 Posted January 9, 2009 Ben, Great shot... love the composition, for me the cloud is great, not distracting but rather helping to build a rather electric feeling in the image.

allamande Posted January 10, 2009 Share #9 Posted January 10, 2009 This is one amazing image... Two strong stories are going on, along with their interaction! It's very intriguing that "the watcher" is not watching the skaters at all. What is his story? The skaters look festive and inviting and they fit with the rest of the scene, in the rink, under the ominous looking winter sky, but they are presented as backdrop, and not the main story. The image delights as it raises many questions. Ece

antistatic Posted January 10, 2009 Share #11 Posted January 10, 2009 I say leave the sky as is. Where I am it is about 97F. The ice and sky looks so inviting.

roguewave Posted January 10, 2009 Author Share #13 Posted January 10, 2009 mtsens1, thanks. The sky suddenly darkened as late afternoon suddenly became dusk. It felt awesome. Marco, thanks for the HCB allusion. He's a favorite. Keep nagging. I love it. Stuart, as always, your comments, insights, support and context are a mainstay for me. Bo, a prescient comment. It had snowed earlier & I feared that lightning was soon to come & we are perched on an elevated promenade. Ivan, thanks. Marie-Louise, thanks & you are in good company. Martin, thanks. Ece, very perceptive. My wife was first to walk up to the landing & I remained at ground level taking some frames. After I while a slowly made my way to her & observed this young man for a few minutes before while on the steps. He seemed upset and was focused on a young couple that was skating. He was clearly distracted. He said a few things that led me to believe that his lady was out there with another guy & he was Pissed. Just as the light went dark, he got solemn & I took the frame. We left immediately. Ed. thanks. David, wish I was there. Enrico, thanks. The young man certainly felt that way.
