Hi Guys,

Come on guys, the original poster wanted to know if he should by an M8 now or should he wait until the next version is released. IMO he can purchase an M8 now - most people here have had great success with their camera's (just look at the postings in the image sections of this forum), and yes, while there are issues, the camera is stable and does give great results.

This was not meant to be a mud slinging contest...

I wouldn't wait. If you want an M8 now, get one. No one knows if there will be another M digital camera and if so it could be a long wait.

Check into the D700 though with some Zeiss glass. I bought one last week and it is wonderful, the image quality is outstanding and it's great for documentary work. It is certainly heavy for travel, but really the performance is amazing.

I have two M8s and I haven't had any problems with either one, other than the occasional lockup where I have to remove the battery. They're great for travel and are small, light and a pleasure to work with.

Your statement seems to have a conflicting set of priorities. You want a thing of beauty to hold and then you add reliable to the list. It's like asking a Lambroghini owner whether you should buy one. Most Italian cars are things of beauty but I am not sure I would use the term reliable in the same sentence (no offense meant to Lambro owners).

In any case a camera that far more than one or two owners have had to send back for work or replacement (I went through three before I got a good one) and one which, if you follow this forum you will find someone almost every day having a major problem with, is not what I would call reliable. The lenses, on the other hand are works of art and they charge for them like they are works of art. Ask yourself this question: If I just paid $3K, $4K, $5K or $6K for my camera and I have to send it off to be repaired where it may be gone for a month or more will I be pissed? If the answer is no, I'll just buy another one as a back up then this is your baby (you also have a lot of money). If the answer is yes then either wait for something more reliable or buy something more reliable. You can get a Japanese camera, very reliable but not always so beautiful for a lot less money and with a camera like the G1 or one of the others plus lens adapters still use Leica glass.

Enjoy your decision either way.:D :D

Hi John,

With all due respect to your POV on this, I've found my M8.2 and current M8 to be as reliable as any other digital cameras I've owned or tested. There were some problems early on but I think the camera is pretty solid now. The drawbacks and weaknesses, which certainly exist, are also very well-known by now. I did have a problem with an M8 in early 2007 but that was the last time.

And yes, there are camera problems, worries, concerns, etc. on forums for virtually every camera. The M8 was once buggier than average but I don't think that's still the case.

To the OP, if you really want one and can afford it then maybe you should get it. Not only do we not know what DRF may be next (and when) but we don't even know how long we'll be on this earth to enjoy it.

Cheers,

Sean

jaapv,

Actually, you missed my point. :D

John I think by now everyone on this forum, of any intelligence, clearly gets your point.

That is to constantly bash Leica and specifically the M8.

Clearly the M8 was not for you, for whatever reason, and you sold it. At that point a normal person would of moved on but instead you seem to have a vendetta against the M8 and Leica.

Even when you owned one you very rarely posted anything good about it.

I really don't see why you continually do this, other then the reason stated above.

I'm just calling them as I see them.

Sean,

As you know I deeply respect your point of view and skills as a photographer but the digital world has been my purview for over 40 years now and when someone posts as Noah did above that I haven't had any problems but the occasional lock-up fixed by removing the battery, I have to disagree. That's like saying my car runs fine except for the occasional times it quits on the freeway but once I pull over it restarts just fine. A very reliable car though. A $5K camera should not still be having such issues. I could understand that when they rushed it to market it had some bugs but it took far too long to address them and they still have far too many bugs for a premium product. I also understand the if the RF method of viewing is of hyper critical importance to you it may outweigh all other considerations. However, the other advantages, light weight, small size quietness and ability to use M lenses are now met by a camera costing a fraction of the M8 without any sign (at least so far) of the firmware gremlins that have plagued the M8 and the ability to use those fine lenses over their sweet spot without a UV/IR filter.

Hi John,

For what its worth, I don't think I've had a lock-up with an M8 since early 2007. The M8 and M8.2 bodies I use have been working without a hiccup (knock wood as with any electronic or mechanical device). Again, I know you've not been happy with the M8 but my own experience is that it has been the best digital camera, for my needs and purposes, I've ever used. I especially like the M8.2. As you know, I'm not beholding to any company. That's just what my experience has been thus far.

And, yes, indeed the G1 is very different but quite interesting in its own right.

Cheers,

Sean

I've also been working with a M8 and 8.2 and have never had any problems. The only glitch I've faced is the time it takes for my 8 to ready to shoot when using a SDHC card. Given that, I mainly use a SD card. No dissatisfaction here.

Jamie... Welcome. First off, barjohn is a troll. He will bad mouth the M8 and try to say he is objective. We do not take him seriously here. Listen to jaapv.

On to greater things. You stated that you love the leica lenses. That struck me. You will love the M8. You get it. I am sure you will love the M8.
