Anguish Posted January 14, 2009 Share #24 Â Posted January 14, 2009 I ski a lot in the backcountry and keep it around my neck most of the time, w/o the neoprene cover. But I usually ski with folk who don't cotton to waiting around. It slips into an inside side pocket of my shell while climbing. When I'm not wearing the shell, it is slung across my chest and kind of under an armpit. When making turns it hangs around my neck, right on my chest, up high, kind of sitting on top of my avalanche transceiver (which is one layer deeper and just above my bellybutton.) The tight parka keeps it in place. This is high enough so when I do deep knee bends as part of my powder turns, the camera doesn't hit my knees. If I hang it any lower, it has banged the top of a knee, which is unsettling. But I ski mostly untracked powder and am not worried, with this configuration, about crushing my chest, and camera, during a faceplant, which could happen on hardpack. On the fast, packed trail out at the bottom, I can shift the camera into the interior side pocket again. This arrangement keeps the camera available. The alternative is to put it in the backpack until you see something you want to photograph. But you will shoot inversely to how packed away it is. Ski photo pros at Jackson Hole stow their DSLRs and lenses in a variety of back/belt packs which they whip around to the front, unzip and access. But that rig is all they carry and has no room for other stuff. These folk work at the ski resort and ride chairlifts.
imported_reinierv Posted January 14, 2009 Share #25 Â Posted January 14, 2009 be carefull when putting the camera in your rucksack...this can be pretty damp and condensation is a known M8 killer Always make sure that it can breath and you will be ok
