(The organic bit behind the camera.)
Advertisement Posted August 16, 2009 Posted August 16, 2009 Hi Nicoleica, Take a look here What is my M8 problem? HW or Firmware. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
hoppyman Posted August 16, 2009 Share #22 Posted August 16, 2009 Dean I wonder if you are just filling the buffer and the camera has to catch up writing the files to the card? I see that you have tried a new card to ensure the card native write speeds are not contributing. Are you shooting a quick sequence? Continuous or Single mode? Discreet or Standard Advance? Are you shooting DNG, DNG +JPG or JPG? Shooting both slows the camera signioficantly. I recently upgraded to the latest firmware for the M8. Since then, I have had 4 occurrences of the following: Shooting away; after a dozen frames or so, the camera locks up, or rather, it doesn't fire or respond to anything; turn it off, and it's still on!; take out the battery, count to 10, put in the battery. It's fine... for a little while. I met a guy in my local store (Glazer's) who was describing this problem he had with his M8, repaired under warranty. "Hey, I have that problem, too!" Anyone else? Suggestions? Thanks. Dean
Paul Edwards Posted August 17, 2009 Share #23 Posted August 17, 2009 Hi I am a new M8 user and this week end my new M8 locked up 3 times I have not yet installed new firmware. What happened was the whole camera went dead, no screen or anything. To reset it I had to remove the battery. I just assumed it might be something I was doing. On reflection I think the battery might have been near its end on the three occasions. I have now upgraded the firmware and will monitor it better when using it again. But anyway the results from the camera are great and am finding is easier to use by the day.
chris_tribble Posted August 17, 2009 Share #24 Posted August 17, 2009 My feeling here is that most of this is down to C mode and people transferring from machine-gun style DSLR habits... My own practice with any camera is to avoid rapid shooting modes (unless I'm doing sports / rapidly moving animals - and even then with the Leica I'm better off working with Single shot mode (vis:L1000300). Not scientific - but I think an awful lot of reported problems have arisen when people have combined C mode with Discreet Shutter mode ... Avoid this combination seems like good advice... Though I also have to say that Discreet Shutter mode is my default - and I've never had a problem with it thus far...
john_newell Posted August 17, 2009 Share #25 Posted August 17, 2009 I think that's likely basically right. I had a "Test Drive" rental lock up in C mode but it was using 1.xxx firmware (pre-discrete shutter). At the time I was experimenting, holding the release down fully and letting the camera write as fast as it could clear the buffer. After a bit it showed "shutter fault." I managed to unlock it not with battery removal (no effect) but with a complicated buttons down-power up sequence but I reached the conclusion that the C mode should be used with caution. Probably any buffer-clogged condition should be approached with caution. By the way, in the context of this camera, I don't view this as a big issue. I would probably feel differently if I were trying to use the M8 for all purposes, but I don't.
Shootist Posted August 17, 2009 Share #26 Posted August 17, 2009 HiI am a new M8 user and this week end my new M8 locked up 3 times I have not yet installed new firmware. I think this has more to do with low battery then anythng else. Honestly I have never had a lockup while I was taking pictures with any of my M8's, I've had a total of 4 M8's. I did and probably will still have lockups when going into sensor cleaning mode. But then I've had that happen with all 4 of the M8's I've had. If you're not continuely taking picture and you're letting the camera sit for 1-2 hours it is best to change out the battery for a fresh one once you get to one bar left on the battery meter. Or if the meter shows 2 bars and the camera has set for a couple of days switch out the battery for a fresh one before you start using it. In any event you need at least one extra battery and I'd suggest having a total of 3. I don't use continuous mode much and when I do it is for just a short set of shots usually at low shutter speeds and no more then 2 or 3 shots at any one time. Although I have on occasion I have set it to continuous mode and filled the buffer but that was to check write times with different cards. Even in those few times I've never had the camera lock up. I rarely if ever use the discreet mode and since I rarely use C mode I've personally never seen this type of lockup either. But from all report those two things together are a lockup waiting to happen.
