ommanney Posted December 30, 2008 Share #1 Posted December 30, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi everyone, Well as a new owner of the M8.2 I was saddened just now when I went to download all my "snaps" from the christmas period only to find there was NOTHING on the card - When I checked the camera as I was shooting they were there but now nothing. I have the latest M8.2 and bought a Lexar 133x 8gb card to go with it. Has anyone had a similar experience - should I get a smaller card or am i having my 'first' bad experience with the Leica???? Any advice would be Great! Thanks - its good to be here. C:confused:
Advertisement Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 Hi ommanney, Take a look here Images just vanishing on my new M8.2 and Lexar 8gb 133x card. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Steve Ash Posted December 30, 2008 Share #2 Posted December 30, 2008 First check within camera whether the pics show up on the screen. If not get a recovery software. Check on lexar website. Do not formate the card before you tried to recover. Regards Steve
rbaron Posted December 30, 2008 Share #3 Posted December 30, 2008 Make sure you have an appropriate card reader. I can't give you the specifics but I understand some of the newer larger cards are not read by older card readers.
stunsworth Posted December 30, 2008 Share #4 Posted December 30, 2008 8 gigs means that it's an SDHC card, as mentioned above not all readers can work with these cards. Put the card back in the camera and press play, if you can see the images on the camera LCD then it's a card reader problem.
Shootist Posted December 30, 2008 Share #5 Posted December 30, 2008 Please post whether you are usinga Mac or PC. Whether or not your card read sees SDHC cards. If you put the card back in the camera and hit the play button do the images show up on the camera LCD screen. One thing with the M8 is the way Leica positioned the buttons and how they stick out from the body of the camera. I have many times put my camera to my eye and had the LCD screen on with either the set menu being displayed or the REAL Menu showing on the screen. I've even had it change settings all by itself from the way the camera was resting against my body and the buttons being pushed accidently. Could be somehow the camera formatted the card all be itself. If that is the case then the images are still on the card but you will need a image recovery program to retrieve them. Just don't take any more images using that card until you can run a image recovery program.
SJP Posted December 30, 2008 Share #6 Posted December 30, 2008 Put the card back in to the camera, the pictures should still be there using 'play' (assuming you did not do anything with the card except plug in to a card reader only to find nothing there). If you don't have a cardreader at hand for the SDHC standard then you can always transfer using the M8 via the usb cable (not the preferred route but it works, more or less). You then need to rename all the files to *.DNG once they are copied to your hard disk. NOTE: this is for PC's no idea what happens on a Mac. sfokevin Posted December 30, 2008 Share #7 Posted December 30, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Also... Did you shoot all your pic with the raw image option only?... If you are not familiar with raw files (.dng)... it may be you do not have any software installed that recognizes the images... Raw files are not like .jpgs... (that can be immediately seen by any computer)... Raw files must be converted (With the software that came with your camera) into jpegs or opened in an application that recognizes .dng files (Like Adobe Lightroom)... ommanney Posted December 30, 2008 Author Share #8 Posted December 30, 2008 Thanks everyone for getting back to me so quickly. Firstly I am a Mac user using the latest Photo Mechanic editing software and Photoshop CS3 to process my raw files (never shoot jpeg). The pictures were definately on the card and when I took the card back out of the reader and put the card back in the M8 to see if they were there the camera told me that there were no images on the card (i had not deleted or formatted them and as far as I could tell no buttons had been accidently pushed) - they simply vanished somewhere between taking them out of the camera and plugging them into the USB reader. I have been reading this morning that there seems to be an issue with some of the larger cards?? I just went out and bought a Sandisk 4gb Extreme 3 sdhc so lets see what happens now! Scary stuff if you have a big shoot ahead!!! C
michali Posted December 30, 2008 Share #9 Posted December 30, 2008 I've always been really scared of using any cards over 2G, for precisely this reason! Too many people I know have lost files on the bigger cards. I have about 10 X 2G cards and I think only 1 X 4G.
brucek Posted December 30, 2008 Share #10 Posted December 30, 2008 I also recommend setting the camera to not take pictures if there isn't a card plugged in. I got careless one time and took a series of photos and reviewed each one, but was annoyed to find out that I had forgotten to plug a card in. Kind of like not ensuring that film was properly caught in the take-up reel in the old, bygone analog days... :-)
Hacker Posted December 30, 2008 Share #11 Posted December 30, 2008 I use 16GB cards (Extreme III) and have no issues so far, both on the M8 and M8.2.

Sure the shutter fires but if you hit the play button you get a message on the LCD " No SD card inserted". Also when you turn it on it give you the same message. Red Dot Posted December 30, 2008 Share #13 Posted December 30, 2008 Just as a point, I have been using both the Lexar 8 gb 133x and the SanDisk Extreme 8 gb 30 mb edition in my 8.2 with no issues. I been using a Moshi reader into my IMac and and MacPro... If you did delete from the card when in the reader, Mac will dump the images in trash first. Given Leica will let you shoot with no card, the question is, will it let you shoot with a locked card? C.. have you confirmed the card is no locked " unlocked- side slide in up position / locked- side slide in bottom position
ho_co Posted December 31, 2008 Share #14 Posted December 31, 2008 C-- One thing I don't think anyone has mentioned, and you're probably aware of it: Don't modify the card in any way till you can run some file recovery software. Best bet is probably to lock the card to be sure nothing new happens to it that could create further problems. And do keep us posted. There have been a couple mentions on the forum of almost formatting a card accidentally by virtue of the simple sequence of button pushes the M8 needs to reformat. If the loss of images is due to a reformat, the images will be recoverable. Good luck.
