symmetron Posted December 18, 2008 Share #1 Posted December 18, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have two bricks of Fuji Velvia and Provia whose "process before" dates are 2005 and 2007. The film has been continously refrigerated since I bought it, but not kept in freezer. I don't have time to shoot a test roll before I go on a trip. Do you think the film is still good? earleygallery Posted December 18, 2008 Share #2 Posted December 18, 2008 You won't know for certain until you process it, but if kept refrigerated from new then I'd say the 2005 would be absolutely fine - the 2007 definately will be fine.
rleffingwell Posted December 19, 2008 Share #3 Posted December 19, 2008 I agree with James. While frozen film is even more stable, the statement that both a Fuji rep and a Kodak rep made to me reminded me that film is a chemical process. If you can retard (by refrigeration) or virtually stop (by freezing) the process, than you postpone expiration dates by that much time. The one caveat I would add is that I would not shooot the most important job of my career with the film unless I had tested it. If it's anything less than that, you should be fine. pleeson Posted December 19, 2008 Share #4 Posted December 19, 2008 I wouldn't risk it with 3+year old slide film, especially with a crucial trip. Unless you really enjoy fixing color balance in post-processing....
xjr Posted December 19, 2008 Share #5 Posted December 19, 2008 The 2007 will be fine..you will take your chances with the 2005 but I bet that will be ok as well.
andybarton Posted December 19, 2008 Share #6 Posted December 19, 2008 I've used three or four year old slide film that's lived its life in a fridge without any problems. But, having said that, if this is a "once in a lifetime" thing, then buy some fresh stuff. It's not expensive, after all.
