rjsphd Posted December 16, 2008 Share #1 Posted December 16, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) This is my first post so pls excuse my ignorance. I have owned a m6 for years, now a dlux 4 as of a month, but am interested in getting an m8. I see several for sale used now. Advice is welcomed: 1) do I need special filters for my M lenses with the m8? I seem to have read something like that. 2) Are the firmware upgrades I should pay attention to? 3) will the M8 work with my voightlander lense (20mm). 4) Any particular problems to be especially aware of when buying a used m8? Warm regards, Rob

spylaw4 Posted December 16, 2008 Share #2 Posted December 16, 2008 Welcome to the forum, Rob! To give brief answers to your questions: 1. Yes UV/IR cut filters are needed - definitely for lenses at/below 35mm focal length and preferably for longer ones. 2. YES! But beware of needing to use an older type SD card to install V2.0 so that you can use SDHC cards. After that you can use SDHC to install further updates IIRC. 3. Yes but remember the 1.33x focal length factor - your 20 (21?) will effectively become a 28 and need a view finder. Screw thread lenses will of course need an adapter, and you should consider a codable LTM8 adapter from Milich. 4. Probably better to buy from a dealer who will give a guarantee for at least 6 months on a used M8. Despite what you may read here, most M8's seem to be pretty well trouble free. stunsworth Posted December 16, 2008 Share #3 Posted December 16, 2008 1. Yes UV/IR cut filters are needed - definitely for lenses at/below 35mm focal length and preferably for longer ones. Coding may not be needed for lenses with a focal length of 35mm or longer, but the filters are needed at all focal lengths for accurate colour work.
