Andy,

It's a glitch that many hundreds, if not thousands of people are / were (hopefully) suffering with wireless networks, ie: the constant dropping of the connection.

In a simple explanation as possible, Airport does not seem to recognise that you are live ( ie: using the net or whatever ) and therefore drops into sleep mode. However this is deep, deep sleep mode, again ie: the system thinks that you are off line, and promptly drops the connection. The strange thing is ( well two of them actually ) is that (1) Airport still thinks you are connected, but you aren't, and (2) even though you are moving from page to page within the same site, Airport does not recognise this as activity and still drops you.

I have a October 2008 iMac and the wife a November 2008 iBook. both machines suffer from this problem if being run in wireless mode, but as soon as l connect my machine directly via cable into the router, my problems disappear.

As l implied above, this is a well documented problem on various Apple / Airport boards, so l know it's not me losing the plot or my marbles.

regards ...... philip

That's interesting

I am a mod on a Mac forum, too, and I've not noticed that one. As I said, I have had no problems with Airport

190 MB of updates must be fixing something :)

Andy,

The new 10.5.6 after installing twice, does the trick. But there WAS a problem with live feeds. Otherwise, all seems ok right now with PS4, AI, LR2 etc. :o

I still have the same issue with WEP authenticated networks. When the computer wakes from sleep it isn't on the network. You have to run network diagnostics and manually re-enter the password. It evidently will not remember the WEP password or won't re-authenticate properly. Annoying to say the least...

I also had *no* wireless after running the 10.5.6 update via software update. I used ethernet to download the "combo" update, ran that and then at least the wireless worked. But the WEP issue remains...

Interesting - I bought two 24inch iMacs at the end of November and have not had this problem or with the Macs they replaced and neither with my old G4 Powerbook.

I don't think there is any doubt whatsoever, that this glitch / these glitches are very random indeed. I know that efforts have been made to try and find the common denominator, but so far everything seems to have failed.

It's not that it's a critical problem, just very, very irritating indeed. Try and image the fun we have had today downloading the update to my wife's machine, when every five minutes or so Airport decided that we had gone to sleep, and therefore the connection wasn't needed !

Are any of the people having problems also running RealAudio download manager by any chance? You can see this by going to System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items.

When I switched routers from a Belkin to an Airport Express one, I found that my desktop machine would lose the connection to the internet even though the Airport icon on the desktop indicated a full strength signal. I could only re-establish it after manually going into the Airport Express utulity and reseting everything. After about 10 minutes the connection would be lost again.

A search on the internet (which I can't replicate at the moment) indicated that it was a problem caused by packets being sent by the RealAudio download manager - I removed that from my user's login items and everything was ok. This had me stumped for about a week until I found the solution.

Hope it helps.

Oh, some of that sounds familiar, thought after getting a new Airport Extreme the problem was fixed: The Airport Express (original or at least not the newest one) as well as the white Airport disc had problems. If you read the specifications, you'll see that the Extreme base is the one supporting most standards all the time. And as far as I recall, the new standards in the Intel machines required a newer airport base - actually.

It's a mess when it doesn't work. Whenever I experience problems with wireless networks, I go into System Settings > Network > Airport > Advanced > TCP/IP > RENEW DHCP LEASE, and that usually handles the problem. Or I shut down the wireless unit and start it again (especially non-Apple ones can need this).

Running network diagnostics never ever did any good for me, except telling me it was a hopeless situation (and then sometimes while wasting time on it, network had established itself meanwhile ;-)

Hope this helps, though!

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the help, but been there and done that - it's not just Real Player and widgets that causes the problems. I'm fairly certain of that, in that neither of us have Real Player installed or any of the offending widgets.

I'm just hoping the new version does it's stuff. It's fair to say that it's been nearly two hours, and the wife's machine had yet to throw a wobbly. Not going to jump to any conclusions thought until it's been running for a full day, without the dreaded drop.

In my travels, I often jump onto airport networks, hotel and media centers at tracks.

I find the best way to use Network Diagnostics is through Safari. If you aren't connecting, just open Safari. When it can't connect, it asks if you want to run Network Diagnostics. It is at this point I run it and have good success. When I run it via System Preferences, I find its not as reliable. Don't know why.

Steve,

I'm now running "Flip-for-Mac" instead and removed the "real-time-player". Afterwards, everything was ok with music files and you-tube, but still had the "streaming". I downloaded (took 10 minutes - large file) and it worked ok. Oh, I reset the pram and restarted on my imac and all was ok. I have not tired this on my macbook pro as of yet. BTW, both are 2008 models; the MacBook Pro is only 1 month old. I don't remember this as a problem on my replaced MacBook 2007.

Oh well..... Mac is still the way to go!!!! (Windoze users: sorry about your luck)
