antistatic Posted December 12, 2008 Share #21 Posted December 12, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) All the hallmarks of classic Leica withdrawal Poor chap Take this thread with a glass of fine red wine: I Love My MP Add a roll of Kodak Ektar 100 You'll feel a lot better in the morning Allan, do you work on commission? How dare you lure all these poor unsuspecting souls to the "I love my MP" thread. Should Ektar replaced Tri-X as the favourite food of MPs?
Advertisement Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 Hi antistatic, Take a look here I miss my M. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Dan States Posted December 13, 2008 Share #22 Posted December 13, 2008 i just got my M8 used from a good friend who bought it when it first came out - pretty much first batch. I've not noticed any focus shift in my normal shooting but i do shoot at very low shutter speeds and some 'fuzz' is normal. Just curious - how would i test for this focus shift? and is this repairable? Don't. No it isn't. It's in most high speed lenses. Forget about it. Further investigation will not improve your photography and will make you an unhappy person.
Guest noah_addis Posted December 13, 2008 Share #23 Posted December 13, 2008 Should Ektar replaced Tri-X as the favourite food of MPs? My MPs are on a strict Tri-X only diet.

Further investigation will not improve your photography and will make you an unhappy person. A new lens that has it is the Zeiss ZM 50/1.5 Sonnar. I'm pretty sure the Leica 50/1.4 ASPH doesn't have it. Oh, and the new Canon 50/1.2 L has it too.
Guest darkstar2004 Posted December 13, 2008 Share #25 Posted December 13, 2008 Leica Ms are a superb object (very special look and feel) and - I cannot describe it but I am sure about it - photographs, particularly street & portraits, have something special that makes than stand out from the crowd of standardized point-and-shoot or dslr cameras. Question is - how frequent are problems with M7 or MP? Should I expect the same technical malfunctions, namely with focus, I was getting with the M8? M cameras are special - no, they are sublime; they are high art made of brass, steel, glass and vulcanite. My MP is hands down my favorite camera ever. I didn't really "get it" about Leicas till I took the leap and bought my MP right after they came out 5 years ago. For those who don't get it, rent an MP for a weekend - you won't want to give it back! I'm going to send it in for a clean/lube/adjust in January and I hate the thought of being without it for 3 to 4 weeks. As far as problems, not one issue of any kind in 5 years. I've just picked up an untouched M4 with the original L seal, one owner, never serviced, 40 years old and still taking pictures fine. Unless there is something wrong with it I wouldn't bother! The only reason I had cla's in the past was to fix specific problems, M6 sticky framelines, M6ttl lightleak, new MP with erratic slow speeds.

I've just picked up an untouched M4 with the original L seal, one owner, never serviced, 40 years old and still taking pictures fine. I doubt very seriously that M4 was "untouched". Lack of use is the kiss of death for Leica Ms, especially the older ones made before they used modern synthetic lubricants. Just because it looks unscathed doesn't mean it wasn't used regularly. It's just possible the owner wasn't the sort that measures his manhood by the number scratches and dings on his cameras, or the percentage of surface area worn down to the brass. It's a lot like with cars. A thirty year old car with 8,000 miles on it is as bad as one that's got 240,000 miles on it.

UPDATE well although it is still taking pics, the 1000th speed is way off and most apart from the slow's are under exposing a bit i think. It's off for the CLA to fix these problems. Ludwig Gretch Posted December 15, 2008 Share #33 Posted December 15, 2008 I'm puzzled by the current idea ( obsession ? ) on photography forums, that cameras are somehow like cars, and need regular servicing, lubricant changes, or CLA - if you preffer the current buzz word. After forty five years I have yet to send one for a CLA, and the two Nikkormats ( for example ) that were bought in the early seventies, and used quite extensively, alongside a Rollieflex for wedding and portrait work, are still running sweetly, although having never been opened-up. If you see a Leica, or any other camera that looks like it's had a hard life - pass it by, there are plenty more like the mint M2 I recently aquired that look as though they have only been used two or three times a year!. Cheers, Dave.
stunsworth Posted December 15, 2008 Share #34 Posted December 15, 2008 After forty five years I have yet to send one for a CLA Same here, though over just under 40 years. I bought my M6 used and didn't have it serviced. A couple of years later I was at Leica UK and they tested the shutter speeds and found them all to be within spec. Not to say that some bodies don't need a CLA, but I think that's more likely if they've not being used.
earleygallery Posted December 15, 2008 Share #35 Posted December 15, 2008 I definately wouldn't send a camera in for service unless there was some problem with it. If it aint broke then why fix it?
