chrispatel Posted December 8, 2008 Share #1 Posted December 8, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have a canon 40d and I am looking for something smaller for the ability to take to family events such as church, museums, playgrounds, etc. I don't mind the 40d but I do like portability. Any advice would be much appreciated. What do you all think about the Digilux 2 or D-lux4 for choices? Chris

Tenor1 Posted December 8, 2008 Share #2 Posted December 8, 2008 Welcome to the forum Chris, My recommendation is the D-Lux because of the smaller size. I just got a Digilux-2 and love it but it is a bit bulky and I am also getting the D-lux 4 later this week. I also have a C-Lux 2 and it is a bit noisy for church shots without flash. There is a nice rebate currently offered on the D-Lux. Regards, Carlos Marques
ASpes Posted December 9, 2008 Share #3 Posted December 9, 2008 I have a canon 40d and I am looking for something smaller for the ability to take to family events such as church, museums, playgrounds, etc. I don't mind the 40d but I do like portability. Any advice would be much appreciated. What do you all think about the Digilux 2 or D-lux4 for choices? Chris In use the D/2 and the DLux-4 are quite different cameras, both in handling and in results, at least in the uses you list. To get the best from a D/2 you need not to underexpose, so if indoor family events, churches and museums, where you often meet high contrast situations with strong lights and low lit areas, are a big part of your photography, I'm sorry to say you could get better results from a DLux-4. Last but not least if compactness is something you're looking for, the DLux-4 wins hands-down on this. The D/2 is rather compact but, even without a hood, is not what I'd call a pocket camera, it's just not planned as one. Hope this helps.
Overgaard Posted December 9, 2008 Share #4 Posted December 9, 2008 Have a look here about the Digilux 2. There's also links to further reading: leica.overgaard.dk - Thorsten Overgaard's Leica Sites - Leica Digilux 2 sample photos and tests (as well as Panasonic DMC-LC1)
John Thawley Posted December 9, 2008 Share #5 Posted December 9, 2008 I have a canon 40d and I am looking for something smaller for the ability to take to family events such as church, museums, playgrounds, etc. I don't mind the 40d but I do like portability. Any advice would be much appreciated. What do you all think about the Digilux 2 or D-lux4 for choices? Chris Here's an endorsement. I own 3 Canon 40D bodies... and a range of Canon L Series lenses form 16-35mm, 24-105mm, 70-200mm, 300mm and a 500mm. In addition I own 3 Leica Digilux 2s and 1 Panasonic version of the same camera, the DMC LC1. My Canon gear makes me a nice living. My Leica Digilux 2s make me happy and beautiful pictures. If you're wondering why I have 3... or 4 if you count the Panasonic, it's because I fear no one will ever make a camera this good again. JT
samba Posted December 9, 2008 Share #6 Posted December 9, 2008 Hi Chris, Get the D-Lux 4 and don't look back. I have a Canon 5D with 17-40L and a host of others, they have been collecting dust since I got my Leica D-Lux 4. It is extremely portable, and has excellent IQ. Additionally, the low light capabilities and wide angle lens are perfect for a multitude of photo ops (family, museums, church, et al). I'm particularly fond of street and architectural photography, so it is the camera I've been long waiting for. If you want to save some $$, go for the Lumix LX3. If you are into aesthetics, like myself, the leica version is a wonderful user experience. ; ) Cheers! Samba
Douglasco Posted December 9, 2008 Share #7 Posted December 9, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I agree with John Thawley in his post above. I have several cameras and have just purchased a Digilux 2 its small, light and I have taken some nice photos with it in the few days I have had it.
