I've had this camera for about 16 years now, I've been informed that it is a Leica III mod F 1936, can any one confirm that this is correct!

It is in perfect working order, and it has never been chrome; Should it have been?

The lens is in good cond, and yes it is F2, the number is 369394!

It would have left the factory in a silver chrome or black finish (looks like some traces of chrome on it so I assume chrome). Quite how it reached that condition one can only wonder - looks like perhaps someone was preparing to repaint it, as nearly all traces of the original finish have been stripped away....

But if working fine the the finish will have no bearing on the results you could obtain with it!

One can clearly see that the knobs had chrome on them. Further, the hole in the shell, suppose it is or was a flash synch, is not original.

Would be nice to have it rechromed or black painted. Handling of this camera can improve by giving it a nice 'jacket' .;)

I've already looked on google, unfortunatly the Leica IIIs that I looked at, were not the same as mine! The view finder is not the same shape?

Hi David,

In which way is it different? Are you talking about the little step in the viewfinder frame with the screw in the step? My model III looks just like your photo. The models II and III had this step. The IIIA and IIIB have a large rectangular frame with the screw in the bottom right of the frame. Models IIIC, IIID and IIIF have a much smaller rectangular frame where the screw is outside the frame.

Your camera is a model III. In the US it was also called a model F. That is not the same as a IIIF.

Len, I can't thank you enougth for the infomation that you have given, so in fact it is not a model F.

Just one last thing Len, the camera seems to have been brass plated, is this normale?

Don't mix up model F and IIIf. The Leica IIIf is a much later model, followed only by the IIIg, which was the last of the screw mount Leica cameras. Yours is a Leica III, which was called model F in some markets.

As James has already pointed out, your camera was certainly NOT brass plated. Instead, the material of the metal cover and bottom parts is brass, which was either painted black or chromed. Someone must have removed the chrome or black paint layer in an attempt to refurbish the camera body.

Regards,

Andreas
