Ruhayat Posted December 13, 2008 Share #21 Posted December 13, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Correct. I own the camera (and like it a lot). But IS is in the kit lens, not in the camera body. Oops. Scratch one. But shutter sound and size would be the reasons I'd choose the G1 over the Olies, because I do a fair bit of street shooting and what I call "intimate sniping" (capturing moments between couples without resorting to staging, as HCB purportedly did for some of his intimate shots). The others are just bonus features.
Advertisement Posted December 13, 2008 Posted December 13, 2008 Hi Ruhayat, Take a look here G1 any thoughts?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
TEBnewyork Posted December 14, 2008 Share #22 Posted December 14, 2008 I am quite pleased with my G1. So far I only have the 14-45mm kit lens. The 45-200mm lens is on its way. In terms of my M lenses, I have a adapter on order from Steve Gandy and I am looking forward to playing with my 50 lux. More good news, John Milich is also working on adapters. He has one for LTM which should be available quite soon. I will get one of these because I also own a bunch of CV lenses. The small lenses like the 35mm color skopar will be cool to test out. FrankA Posted December 14, 2008 Share #23 Posted December 14, 2008 Does any one know if novoflex is shipping yet? How do you order one from the US. I have been to the site and cannot find a way to do so. Going to be at a wedding the 27th and it would be sweet to use M lenses on the G1. Thanks, Frank

Thanks, Frank Bob Salomon form HP marketing told me that the first shipment from Novoflex is expected end of Dec and then they have to set price and get them out to dealers. If you are in a rush you could try ordering direct form Germany via phone or email. One person on another forum managed to get one via this approach. marknorton Posted December 14, 2008 Share #25 Posted December 14, 2008 I bought one yesterday; discounted because ex-display, cosmetically perfect with cash rebate from Panasonic and it came to just £390.41, call it €435 or $575. At that price, it's got to be worth trying. A lot of camera for the money, the EVF is a big improvement on the Digilux 2 and the 3" screen is better than the M8's. Whisper quiet - much quieter than the M8 - and I too am keen to try M lenses on it.

monza Posted December 15, 2008 Share #27 Posted December 15, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) If you want to order direct from Novoflex, call them and ask for Lydia. They were extremely helpful both on the phone and via email. I got confirmation of an adapter shipment last week. I'm also awaiting the take-apart. Bob Ross Posted December 15, 2008 Share #29 Posted December 15, 2008 LOL, I can certainly see a lot of screwheads and my screwdriver fits them perfectly... Watch out for itchy screw drivers! The interesting part of a take down would be to see the component dimensions to see just how much design flexiblity is available in this format. I'm one of those who would like to see Oly do a digital Pen F and Oly has said the EVF gives then lots of design possibilities. Bob

peterb Posted December 15, 2008 Share #31 Posted December 15, 2008 Here's current G1 output. Alas, non-Leitz glass. Having a smallish D2 with Leitz (or even some fine Zeiss ZM optics) will be sweet. Whisper quiet - much quieter than the M8 - and I too am keen to try M lenses on it. Mark, I totally agree (although I wished I'd gotten the deal you got!). Compared with the D2, the quality of the G1 EVF is astounding. And while not silent like the D2 the G1 shutter has a very soft unobtrusive quality about it that I find just right. I didn't realize it was quieter than the M8. In the Luminious Landscape, Michael Reichman spoke very favorably about the camera saying how much he likes its compact size and image quality. He must like it quite a bit as I've noticed that he's posted posted several images taken with the G1 in between articles. Peter

Shootist Posted December 15, 2008 Share #34 Posted December 15, 2008 Mark how is the high ISO noise? I'm looking at this camera but will need an adapter for my M lenses. If the image quality is near the M8, noise better then the M8 and can take M lenses this camera could be somewhat a M digital killer. I bought one yesterday; discounted because ex-display, cosmetically perfect with cash rebate from Panasonic and it came to just £390.41, call it €435 or $575. Iron Flatline Posted December 15, 2008 Share #35 Posted December 15, 2008 Also just found this article, though nothing new in it at this point. Question: what is the crop factor from an M-mount lens to a G1. is 2:1? Does my 35mm crop down to a 70mm?
johnastovall Posted December 15, 2008 Share #36 Posted December 15, 2008 I like the micro 4/3 concept as way to use older lenses but I don't care for (and won't buy because) of the "baby dSLR'' look. Maybe Olympus will give us a modern version of the Pen not the brick they showed at Photokina.
monza Posted December 15, 2008 Share #37 Posted December 15, 2008 Yes, 2:1 crop factor. There are ISO comparison tests on outbackphoto.com. The G1 does very well considering it is handicapped by sensor size. Then again, it's got a huge price advantage. M8 here G1 here Scroll down to "ISO Test"
peterb Posted December 17, 2008 Share #38 Posted December 17, 2008 I was just in Borders Bookstore this afternoon and the current issue of Popular Photography was out with their test of the G1. In their tests Pop Photo claimed the G1's resolution came in at an astounding 2350 lines of resolution (I should note that others who've tested the resolution have come in a little less but not significantly so) and a color quality (again according to Pop Photo) that surpassed the Nikon D300. Another website, digitalcamerainfo.com, seemed to confirm that with their tests which put color accuracy significantly higher than the D90 which is no slouch in the color department. Noise as predicted becomes noticeable but okay at 800 and totally intolerable at 3200. (Pop Photo also praised the kit lens in terms of distortion, aberrations and sharpness and, like others, have said that Panasonic would be providing some additional, more optically impressive stablemates). The main thing is the potential of attaching some of the legendary Leitz optics to this newcomer (that earned Pop Photo's camera of the Year Accolade besting such heavy-weight contenders like the new Canon 5D Mk II and Nikons formidable D700) which bodes extremely well in the possibilities department. This little guy (along with what Olympus no-doubt will present) is creating a most tantalizing alternative to what's out there. Peter
