feedpuppy Posted October 10, 2006 Share #1 Posted October 10, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Leica D-Lux 3 vs. Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2 Photo Gallery by koo22 at pbase.com I didn't see big differences between them besides some different handling with the colors. Maybe I should just go for the cheaper LX2?
Advertisement Posted October 10, 2006 Posted October 10, 2006 Hi feedpuppy, Take a look here Anyone has checked these D-Lux3 vs LX2 photos? . I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
smokysun Posted October 10, 2006 Share #2 Posted October 10, 2006 leica service and 2 year warranty might be worth the extra, if this is the camera you want.
J Mitchum Posted October 10, 2006 Share #3 Posted October 10, 2006 Yeah, if you're going to buy the D-Lux 3 do it for the better warranty. I don't see any "magic" here. Some better, some worse. Most of the images between them look identical.
tommycrown Posted October 11, 2006 Share #4 Posted October 11, 2006 Is that just me? I see Panny has brighter color on each sample~~ probably just setting thing since it's not possible to treak the same sensor for better IQ.
hawkeye_a Posted October 11, 2006 Share #5 Posted October 11, 2006 the color saturation on the Panny looks higher, giving it a more "water color" look compared to the Leica. The noise levels look very similar, and not as bad as some reviews made it out to be.
kobold Posted October 11, 2006 Share #6 Posted October 11, 2006 I have shot a couple of hundred images on the LX-2. Excellent ergonomics (that little bump under your second finger RHS body really works). Only shot JPEGS so far (on the road and only a friend's computer to work with---no Raw processor). Seems great so far. I don't think the 28/35 stick-on finder is necessary, despite crying out about the lack of a finder in another post: you can use the LCD for framing even if it's really close to your face; this was a surprise. Fill flash works really well, EV on both flash and image can be separately dialled in, and everything you need can be adjusted on the fly without going to a menu (one-press buttons, in many cases). Cute toy, and no one notices it in your hand. There is a fast-focussing choice in the menu that allows you to use the camera arm's length without even looking at the finder. And in respect of comparing DLux-3 and LX-2, I imagine that if shooting Raw, then like the D2 vs. LC-1, no difference is what I'd expect. These things are just toys, but very nice toys that produce good usable images, as far as I can see (spent all morning in PS looking at the ones I shot yesterday). dugby Posted October 12, 2006 Share #7 Posted October 12, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hey Kit, at ISO 100, just how comparable are the images of the LX2(at 4x3) and LC1 ? Can you post some samples please of identical shots. Dugby (Extremely west of the west of Sydney).
feedpuppy Posted October 13, 2006 Author Share #8 Posted October 13, 2006 Thanks, Kit. I'm more worried about the jpeg image quality. I've seen people kept saying this is a great camera if you shoot under iso200 AND in Raw. But for me, most of the time I would hope I can just shoot in jpeg. If D-Lux 3 is less aggressive in NR than LX2, then maybe D-Lux 3 is worth the extra hundred bucks?
kobold Posted November 26, 2006 Share #9 Posted November 26, 2006 have a look at this gallery herre: http://bodypress.com.au/photos/Vancouver_Montreal_images_2006/ I don't see too many noise "issues" here, and these were all shot jpegs, low contrast, low sharpening, high colour saturation. That's how I was seeing over there: the light is totally different to here. Cheers, KL
rob_x2004 Posted November 26, 2006 Share #10 Posted November 26, 2006 If D-Lux 3 is less aggressive in NR than LX2 Given they are the same camera I would be a little bit surprised. I know there was a rumour with the Digilux 2 and the LC1 was it? People were quoted, then unquoted, or withdrew themselves. Nothing firm. Rumour. Hearsay. Till someone comes up with published technical spec from both Leica and Panasonic I will just assume they are exactly the same all over. Anyone know any better? I mean something that would stand up in court not bulldust one camera comparisons by amateurs. Warranty? Yeah right.
rob_x2004 Posted November 26, 2006 Share #11 Posted November 26, 2006 If you think I am being harsh in assuming the comparisons are bullshit then I refer you to the portrait image L1000069-2.jpg You will note there are two images, which are distincly different in appearance, hence comparison between cameras? However both carry the same EXIF, it is just a copy of the first file. A precise copy, the same file just uploaded later, and my point is, they look entirely different. NickR Posted November 26, 2006 Share #12 Posted November 26, 2006 He's labelled both of those shots as coming from the same camera. No comparison there. Anyway, I'm sure the dlux3 is great but $200 for an extended warranty on a $400 camera is poor economics, imo. I bought the LX2 and am going to buy the L1 unless someone can show me that it's more than a warranty/resale thing.
hawkeye_a Posted November 26, 2006 Share #13 Posted November 26, 2006 Tyota or Mersades ? Toyota will be more than adequate for the majority, but some still seem to prefer the Mersades. It's just preference at the end of the day.
Peter41951 Posted November 26, 2006 Share #14 Posted November 26, 2006 He's labelled both of those shots as coming from the same camera. No comparison there. In this instance I just think she's posted an original and a processed/PShopped copy of the same file of a portrait; don't think they're supposed to be a pair from the different cameras. rob_x2004 Posted November 26, 2006 Share #15 Posted November 26, 2006 Balls. Title and description of the page is as follows; "Not so scientific" comparison shots of the two cameras. I have just added some quick shots both indoors and out, straight out of camera. NOTE: BOTH CAMERAS ALL STANDARD, AUTO SETTINGS EXCEPT FOR NOISE REDUCTION.....BOTH SET ON LOW. They are the same image. Why they are different is speculation. My point is, you cant trust supposed internet comparisons. Anecdotal at best? Not a chance. Nearly all the comaparative tests are inaccurate, incompetent, error ridden, and affected the uploaders workflow, not just this one.

NickR Posted November 27, 2006 Share #17 Posted November 27, 2006 Yes, but I wouldn't pay Mercedes cash for a car made by Toyota. Who would? Tyota or Mersades ? ho_co Posted November 27, 2006 Share #18 Posted November 27, 2006 Given they are the same camera I would be a little bit surprised. ... Till someone comes up with published technical spec from both Leica and Panasonic I will just assume they are exactly the same all over. Anyone know any better? Rob-- The issue of LFI in which the new cameras were introduced says all the new Leicas have different image-processing firmware from the Panasonic sisters. LFI never said that about the D-Lux 2; in fact, LFI said the D-Lux 2 was identical to its sibling. --HC
hawkeye_a Posted November 27, 2006 Share #19 Posted November 27, 2006 Yes, but I wouldn't pay Mercedes cash for a car made by Toyota. Who would? Well.... as far as the Leica vs Panny question. i would. in fact i did. i just prefer the design of the leica. call me superficial, but thats why. if all things were equal (which they arent)...i would have gone with the Leica just cause it "looks" awesome....what i got was an extra year's warranty and slightly less saturation in pictures. Im no auto-guru....and despite the suttle differences between cars in the same class, arent they all the same anyway? you can compare a Lexus to a Merc.... and id still go for the Mersades, even though a similarily priced Lexus would probably perform better, etc. but thats just me.
