Theo,

studio portraits are often difficult, in my opinion. They do tend, by virtue of the format and conventions inherent in them, to squash much of the creativity out of the photographer. From your excellent shots on the Landscape page you have a good eye for composition, perhaps you might go for a more dynamic approach in the studio.

I must say, however, that the shot you've already posted here would undoubtedly please the young man's nearest and dearest.

theo - a couple of problems..

1. the picture is very off in terms of colors.. now, no problems to make unrelistic colors .. but it is simply has no balance to it. probably the re-processing will solve the issue.

2. to formal

3. when u make a lighting of hair - take care how it goes with the ear - the ear in this case is almost transparent becuase u dont controld the angle of light well enough... little things that u should be aware of next time

4. i very recomend to work as few lights as possible.. two should be enough ... one light should be great for experimentation especially if it is softboxed or unmbrella. note for studies i mean. add ligght only after u initially know what to do with 1 or 2 heads... this is one of the bigest mistakes many people do when study lighting... u ahve digi camera with your work so it should be very eassy for studing process.

look at it this way:

dont create lighting in order to lit the subject... create lighting composition - in studio this is one of the most important controls u have - creating lighting composition, and using your light heads as tools this way
