stuny Posted November 20, 2008 Share #2 Posted November 20, 2008 Pete - I suspect I've seen photos in Road & track but I don't have it. Thank you. Custom for a rich customer? A show car?
Guest flatfour Posted November 20, 2008 Share #3 Posted November 20, 2008 I see it has a Ferrari badge but I don't recognise it at all.

stuny Posted November 21, 2008 Share #5 Posted November 21, 2008 Pete - The more I look at this the less I think it is a Ferarri. The hood strap and sheet metal screws (crude) do not say Pininfarina, or any other coachbuilder for the marque.
Guest flatfour Posted November 21, 2008 Share #6 Posted November 21, 2008 Several cars had Ferarri engines installed including Lancia. It doesn't look like a Stratos though.

steed Posted November 22, 2008 Share #8 Posted November 22, 2008 Ahh, the old North American Racing Team. It has been a long time since they ran the likes of Pedro Rodriguez, or anyone else. I have to admit that I missed guessing the car entirely. John W
elansprint72 Posted November 22, 2008 Author Share #9 Posted November 22, 2008 Michelotti was the carrosseria, from what I can find on the web Chinetti ordered one for Steve McQueen, it was a re-bodied 365GTB (the one we have come to call the Daytona), is was a full convertible with a chisel nose, quite ugly imho. This one was bult for racing and might be even more ugly. Every previous photo of it I've seen it was the usual Retail Red; no idea why it is now blue and white. I can find no mention of there being more than one of these built. I did not actually see it running at Le Mans this year, either I missed it, or they stumped up the 5000GBP entry fee just to leave it in the paddock. poynterama Posted November 25, 2008 Share #10 Posted November 25, 2008 Yes, it was in red livery in all the photos I had seen of it too which initially made me think there may be more than 1 I wouldn't have guessed but the snippet of badge in the first photo (stars and stripes above the prancing horse) was a big hint! Well spotted! I think this paint job is very recent (or was back in July), even the photo in the race programme shows the car in red.
ijporter Posted November 25, 2008 Share #12 Posted November 25, 2008 I couldn't pick it, but after all was revealed, I looked it up on-line and wasn't impressed by what I saw. By itself it may look 'interesting', but next to the Pininfarina 365 GTB/4 it looks clumsy and unbalanced - even the GTO '64-style rear end lacks the finesse of the original. Still - beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so I'm sure someone will believe it to be the most stunning car ever built! Ian
