cocker Posted November 10, 2008 Share #1 Posted November 10, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I've just used an SDHC card in my M8 having previously just used SD cards. I popped it into my old card reader but nothing shows up (I know there are pictures on the card) Silly question but do I need a more up to date card reader specifically for SDHC cards or is there some other problem? jaapv Posted November 10, 2008 Share #2 Posted November 10, 2008 You need a new card reader. Sandisk sells cards in a neat bundle with a little reader. The new readers are retro-compatible with SD cards.
stunsworth Posted November 10, 2008 Share #3 Posted November 10, 2008 I bought one of those Sandisk bundles and it works very well - and the card reader is very small. Of the 4 other card readers I have 2 work with SDHC and 2 don't. The two that don't work are the type that take multiple card types, I don't know if that's anything other than coincidence. Shootist Posted November 10, 2008 Share #4 Posted November 10, 2008 Yes you need a newer card reader. The one I have at home, dual reader CF & SD, works just fine. I bought it about 2 years ago when I got my first M8, didn't have a SD card reader at the time. I got a portable one with a standard SD card bought around the same time, Lexar I think, and that one does not see SDHC cards. Bought a Transcends 4GB SDHC card with SDHC reader from Amazon for $14.99. Works very well, I don't use the card though.
wparsonsgisnet Posted November 13, 2008 Share #5 Posted November 13, 2008 I just got my M8 back from Leica-NJ, where the firmware was set to 2.0. I asked them to set it in case there was a corrupted copy that broke the camera. I will upgrade my second M8 myself, knowing that at least one of them is ok. So, I tested timings with an 8GB SDHC card today. All were done with review turned off. DNG only -- 10 files in 8 seconds, plus 19 seconds for red light to go out. This is about the same write time as with a 2GB SD card with fw 1.x DNG + hi-res JPG -- 5 pairs (10 files) in 10 seconds, plus 101 seconds for the red light to go out. JPG's are a dog! I got about the same timings for a 2GB SD card with fw 1.x. hi-res JPG -- 5 files in 10 seconds, plus 27 seconds for the red light to go out. As we can see, JPG's ask a great deal of the M8, and maybe all digicams. I shoot DNG + hi-res JPG with a 3-second review, when time is not important to me. When I am shooting movement, I use DNG only with no review. I see no improvement in M8 write time for HC, in comparison with SD cards within the SD spec (that is up to 2GB size). The files on the HC cards may well write to the computer faster, but I don't really care and won't be testing that. Techie's, knock yourselves out! Marquinius Posted November 15, 2008 Share #6 Posted November 15, 2008 Bill, Thanks for your field work: I'll stick to my 2GB SD cards also. Don't really care about winning a couple of seconds uploading to my computer either. Marco ps: the techie's must still be testing and calculating, being silent and all
Steve Ash Posted November 15, 2008 Share #7 Posted November 15, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) In my point of view the advantage of SDHC is that you can utilize 8GB cards. This gives you enough memory to drain a full battery to a blinking bar with memory space left on the card. Then I change both battery and memory card together. I have two batteries and two 8GB cards which I haven't needed within one day shooting. Regards Steve

Hmmm ... 8Gb ... what's to lose
wparsonsgisnet Posted December 2, 2008 Share #9 Posted December 2, 2008 Well, I started playing with my 8GB SDHC -- and I agree with Steve Ash. While I don't want to risk everything on one card, being able to shoot without watching the card capacity is wonderful. I shot 3 evenings of dance recently, and it is really easy to shoot 300-400 pix without raising a sweat. Not having to worry about card capacity is very liberating. I just got 2 more and will switch them around so as not to risk losing a lot, but what a break. BTW, the Transcend 8GB SDHC cards are going to $9.38, today, on Amazon. Just last week I paid just under $16 for them at the same place.
