  1. 1. Do we need a new category dedicated to the use of the new Leica M8 digital camera?

    • Yes, I want a Leica M8 section.
    • No, I don't want a Leica M8 section.

I voted no for obvious reasons i have the DMR and will have the M8.

If you want to break it down do it by sensor size which would be the DMR and M8 together/ than 3/4 system than P&S category . This way the P&S stuff is not where the M and R stuff is . There is a lot of information that links the DMR and M8 together. Just another thought

I can see how a large influx of curious newbies, as well as non-rangefinder types interested in the P&S cameras and D system, coming at the same time as the introduction of an exciting new rangefinder camera, could be annoying for the mainstream, long-term Leica users. I'd leave you in peace, but unless you password-protect the subforum, the trolls and the askers of stupid questions will find you. So it's probably a doomed effort.

If I were a code writer, I'd be working on a user-end browser plug-in that would allow forum visitors to block individual posts from showing on their screen, based on author or keywords. It must be possible. It'll make money for somebody.

I actually have a different view on what goes together, and would liketosee SLR vs M. The analogue digital discussions get too "my raw converter vs yours" whereas the fundamental difference of SLR's and RF FAR out weigh's the similarities of DMR and M8

I for one find it extra work to look here for the M8 discussion and then go elsewhere for the M lens discussions.(where, lets face it, allthe experience is, at least until 1016/2006 :-)

One of the difficulties I saw in having an M8 catagory is all the misplaced threads which dosn't help anyone.

I am with Guy, I usually am, IF there were to be a M8 section, it should really be a Professional Leica Digital section that would of course include the DMR.

this is available and called IGNORE function or do I misunderstand something?

Thanks. I should have known that an idea that obvious and useful had already been implemented. And it works! I didn't dig deeply enough into the forum's options.

But then you'd need to allow threads on the MP, M7, M6 etc etc in, or does film no longer count as 'professional' in the brave new world? The object, in other words, would be self-defeating.

This is really rich. Not only do we extensively discuss a camera we have no images from, we worry about where to PUT those discussions.

Unfortuately I worry some troll will make an unpleasant suggestion where to put them!

Guy,

That makes total sense..

But, how's all that going to work?

It seems to me that most of us have various cameras depending on one's personal preference, however, when you post questions, because there are M8, DMR, P&S, DSLR, and etc.. are so mixed and crowded on the first page, sometimes your question gets totally ignored. Thankfully, this hasn't happened to me yet.

Guy, we enter the digtial age and frankly ten subdivisions just is not divisive enough. What have you against pro use film R cameras anyway? Imants suggestions because it breaks into sections subsections and gets over the magical ten, and why should that be a hurdle anyway, is far more in tune with our requirements. I suggest additional subdivisions that allow every member a subforum. The site could be set up with something like an accounting software package to allow users to search a code mumber, say 100010614 which would be the whole leica database of users Professional R Film subflora to paint a pretty landscape. Or you could go to your index and search up say, 00700710614 which would be my Pro R Film forum comments which would be...um..empty. But regardless of that "DIVIDE AND CONQUER!." Into the new age. Where's that Windmill Sancho?

Well all i am doing is presenting a idea. Some forums break down into subforums like Pro lever , Prosumer level type camera. Has nothing to do if your a Pro or not but has to do with the type of gear. The M and R are considered Pro Level Camera's . Many forums that throw the whole lot of gear in one heading gets so confusing . Personnally all I care to read is the M and R on a daily basis, if I want a C lux than I go into that area and look at what I am after. I am just a guest here and they can do whatever they want but if your looking for reading flow than I thought this would work.

Rob not sure what you mean about pro use film camera's. The R9 and M7 and down are considered Pro level Film camera's and used by anyone that uses that gear.

This has nothing to what type of photographer you are . Just about what level of gear it is classified by the industry

Because the M8 is new, it will no doubt generate a lot of posts. However, as it becomes old news it will be regarded as just another camera (albeit digital) in the M series -- as the M7 was.

I've had no problem finding M8 threads. I believe adding another level of complexity to the forum could be counterproductive in the long run.

I say no. M8 is too model specific and would beg further "modeling".

Guy's subforum breakdown seems the smart way to go IF, IF, our UserCP can be tweaked to allow excluding subforums we don't wish to see. The Large Format Photography Forum (vBulletin 6.3.2) has this feature and you can tweak things as SIMPLE or as busy as you like. It works great.

IF we can add that same ability to choose subs, Guy's very-flexible catagory-oriented subforum approach is the way to go.
