OT: Why Are All These Gear Threads in the Film Forum?

I have never visited this forum, but when a "last response" showed up in the main page that interested me, I discovered all these gear threads that I have responded to, because I have some experience with the topics. Shouldn't they have been posted in the "Customer Forum"?

I think people have interpreted the film forum as the place to post non-digital equipment threads. That's what I would have thought the customer forum was for. I always assumed this forum was for questions more or less about film and film processing.

Then again the description of the forum "The Film Forum is about everything regarding non-digital 35mm photography" Implies that equipment threads are ok.

Maybe there's scope for clarification in the forum description if Andreas meant this area to be for film and film processing?

Andy, the problem is that the forum description leaves the impression that it's for equipment as well as processing. If it's only supposed to be for film processing/printing threads, then I think the description needs to be amended to reflect that.

Contrary to what I have (probably) opined in the past, I actually think that the anachronism now is the Customer Forum. The Digital forum and it's sub-fora are pretty self-explanatory, as are the Collectors, and Photo fora, and the Bar.

The Customer Forum was the precursor of most of the "child" fora, but is now a quiet backwater in comparison. A suggestion would be to rename the Customer Forum the General discussion Forum, or something similar. We are, after all, al customers in the first place.

The other thing I would like to see would be an Optics Forum in which lens-related discussions, whether related to digital or film use, could be organised.

Regards,

Bill

However it started, it is clearly the Forum for film related threads, including the kit that is used to expose it.

The Digital Forum is not about pixels and the processing thereof, but .......

In the Film Forum there could be subs for film processing & printing ( ).

The Digital forum now seems well organised to me. However, I do think that lenses, bags ... etc are common to both and am personally dismayed when for example a lens review is posted in the M8 sub-Forum, or somebody attaches an worthy (very rare) M8 image to an M8 thread when it would be better placed (IMO) in the photo thread. Clearly there are paper walls here.

I think the Film Forum should be for all things related to film photography (film, cameras, scanners and related software, processing of film and prints, etc.). Actually, this is what I have always thought the Film Forum was supposed to be. None of that really overlaps with digital.

I thought the Customer Forum was for topics related to Leica the company (ie, strategy, product line, service, website, launches, etc.).

We shouldn't make this any harder than it needs to be.

Is scanning belong to film or digital part?

I mean, if it belong to film part what about scanning of prints in flatbed scanners :)

Seriously, it would be better if film part was called analogue part, and contain film processing, darkroom printing and analogue equipment discussion.

Scanning and from computer priniting would be part of digital, or hybrid subforum in digital or analogue part of forum.

I think that would be it.

If you are scanning film, I believe this is the correct sub-forum. Irregardless, I must scan my film in order to print it. A digital darkroom does indeed belong in the digital section, but there will always be some overlap. If you wish to show your work, film or digital, on this forum it must go into a computer program to be altered for the internet.

That reminds me of dilemma: If God can do everything can He make a stone that even He can't move. If you ask that religious person answer is it is trick question and God can make only what is possibile to make.

Same with is posibille to place non digitalized image on internet.

You must digitalize image to show it in internet or in book, but you can digitalize it ONLY for showing on internet or book. Image doesn't have to be digitalized to be printed and shown on exhibition, in portfolio, hanging on wall.

People used to show and publish photographs decades before internet and digital printing existed. Not everyone wants to publish on internet or book or bilboard, and then digitalization is not important.

It is false dillemma.

Scanning definitely belongs in the film forum. Who scans pictures from digital (i.e., M8, DLux, R, S, etc.)? These days, scanning is a huge part of film photography, and has zero to do with digital photography.

Well, result of scanning is digital file. So is it digital?

Input for scanner is film or print. So is it analogue?

It is hybrid, neither this or that. It would really solve all issues to have hybrid forum.

To expand this, people often say resulting image is only what matters, not how to get it (analogue or digital). Following that logic, if result is only important, scanning is digital because as result one gets digital file. Thus it belongs to digital forum.

Need to introduce purity factor? :)

So, if the M8 image ends up with ink sprayed onto paper that reverts to an analogue process and should not be in the Digital Forum, whereas if it only goes as far as the screen the Digital Forum is fine ?

Hmmm ... see what you mean. Film cameras and scanning do go together though IMO. So let's leave it as it is for now.

Picky, picky, picky! I think the Forum is quite well organized as it is. I first found the Forum when I bought my M8, my first foray into Lieca land since selling my IIIf many years ago. I was quickly able to distinguish digital from film. I suppose I am strange, but I really don't see a problem. I think a reorganization or re-labeling would amount to "make work". It is best to leave very well alone.
