Tolup Posted October 28, 2008 Share #1 Posted October 28, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Dear Forum, I would like to ask for alternative Leica 50mm Lenses apart from the original mounted foldaway 5cm/3,5. Also if there are any experiences of improved picture quality alternative lens vs original. Thanks in advance & Regards Roland

I think the best choice 'ld be a Summicron 2/50 collapsible, to improve the available light possibilities and the improving of sharpening and rendering colors, (BW also). LeonardT Posted October 28, 2008 Share #3 Posted October 28, 2008 Dear Forum, I would like to ask for alternative Leica 50mm Lenses apart from the original mounted foldaway 5cm/3,5. Also if there are any experiences of improved picture quality alternative lens vs original. Thanks in advance & Regards Roland Welcome to the Forum. JC's recommendation of the 5cm/2 collapsible Summicron is a good one as well as the 5cm/2 Summitar. But don't sell the 5cm/3.5 Elmar short, especially the later ones. All of these lenses are 50+ years old so you must pay attention to the glass, especially if there is haze which can reduce contrast. Len
Tolup Posted October 28, 2008 Author Share #4 Posted October 28, 2008 Thanks JC & Len for the Forum welcome! Following your recommendations I found a 5cm/2 collapsible Summicron at a dealer here and will look at it tomorrow. Thanks for the hint of any haze on the lens which I will pay attention to. This particualar lens was originally available at that time - right?! Roland
LeonardT Posted October 28, 2008 Share #5 Posted October 28, 2008 The IIIf was made between 1950 and 1957. The screw mount collapsible Summicron was made between 1953 and 1960. To put that in perspective the screw mount 5cm/3.5 was made between 1924 and 1959. Len
earleygallery Posted October 29, 2008 Share #6 Posted October 29, 2008 Hi, The 5cm Elmar is a superb lens, especially if you find a very clean Red Scale version. As with any period lens condition is all. The Summicron is probably the best alternative if you want more speed and excellent performance. The Summitar, Summarit and Summar are other alternatives with their own qualities. If you want more modern performance you could look at the Voigtlander range of lenses. Tolup Posted October 31, 2008 Author Share #7 Posted October 31, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well after checking several of the suggested lenses in order to improve image quality on the IIIf I came across a new M6TTL and was impressed by the difference of the viewfinder and bought it right away. So for now I just curious to see my personal adaptation and results in comparism.
