elansprint72 Posted November 6, 2008 Share #25 Posted November 6, 2008 In my experience, cameras with brown cases take better photos than those with black cases.

For those who had the add-on flash for D-LUX 4.. is it worth buying ? Thanks. I juz Got My D-LUX 4 Today and i LOVE IT ! If by add-on flash you mean the new Leica CF22, no one has it yet ---- it won't be available till February 2009 according to the retailers. As for the viewfinder, the primary use would be to take photos, at least at the wide-angle end, without having to hold the camera at arms length. If you've only ever used compact digicams, the arms length style of photography may be perfectly natural. But for the many of us that use Leica Ms or SLRs, holding the camera up to one's eye is vastly preferable. An added advantage for some will be the ability to preserve battery power. If you set the camera to the "external viewfinder mode", the LCD is powered down except for the green focus confirmation light. This should allow significantly more use per battery charge. Jeff. mishima Posted November 7, 2008 Share #30 Posted November 7, 2008 Great... now i got it clear about the viewfinder usage. Thanks Jeff!
rob_x2004 Posted November 7, 2008 Share #31 Posted November 7, 2008 ...you set the camera to the "external viewfinder mode", the LCD is powered down except for the green focus confirmation light. My question is wrt external viewfinder, (regardless of LCD power down) how do you know you have AF and how do you know, once you have AF that the focus is anywhere near where you want it? I looked at the P6000 and the G10, and I was surprised how quick they aquired AF (if they were going to get it) but the focus location was where the camera thought I wanted it, not always where I was trying to tell to the camera to get it. brucek Posted November 7, 2008 Share #32 Posted November 7, 2008 My question is wrt external viewfinder, (regardless of LCD power down) how do you know you have AF and how do you know, once you have AF that the focus is anywhere near where you want it? A little green dot will appear in the LCD when focus is locked. I don't see a way of knowing where it focused but to be honest at 24mm equivalent with a small sensor I would think you'd have infinite DoF.
rob_x2004 Posted November 7, 2008 Share #33 Posted November 7, 2008 On the Nikon definitely, you get a green rectangle on the LCD framing the point of AF focus, but I dont think this is translated to the viewfinder, though you get yoru af confirm beep if you have it turned on. On the Canon I believe there is something too, whether the AF confirms or can be set to single fixed point fixed I dont know yet. With all the face detection stuff too bad if the head in the background isnt your subject. You do not have infinite depth of focus at shorter distances, and even on the slower lenses, and down at the wide end of the zoom. The out of focus is very apparent. Happy composition I guess. At close focusing and macro you are probably always going to be on LCD composition, so it matters less. Both the Canon and P6000 seem to be built like brick shitters, the PanaLeica feels flimsy by comparison. Havent dropped them yet though. Anyone? miami91 Posted November 7, 2008 Share #34 Posted November 7, 2008 My question is wrt external viewfinder, (regardless of LCD power down) how do you know you have AF and how do you know, once you have AF that the focus is anywhere near where you want it? Trust... I looked at the P6000 and the G10, and I was surprised how quick they aquired AF (if they were going to get it) but the focus location was where the camera thought I wanted it, not always where I was trying to tell to the camera to get it. I hate the differential focus points, even when using the LCD. So I set mine to center focusing. Being an M user, I'm more comfortable with the whole focus/expose then re-compose approach anyway. Anyway Rob, my approach when using the external VF is to do a half press on the shutter to lock focus and exposure, take my image, and then chimp with the LCD to see if it seems okay. I don't even use the function that shows the green focus light on the LCD. This approach works for me, but may not for others. Jeff.
GCHA Posted November 7, 2008 Share #35 Posted November 7, 2008 I have heard a rumor that Leica is going to make avaliable a lens/filter adapter & hood, like the one that is available for the LX3... Any truth thare?
cfc247 Posted November 7, 2008 Share #36 Posted November 7, 2008 Hi, I just ordered my DLux4 and I am wondering if I would be able to use a third party vf? Does anyone know whether they would be compatible, if yes, what the difference would be between the Leica version and the other? Thanks.
miami91 Posted November 7, 2008 Share #37 Posted November 7, 2008 Hi, I just ordered my DLux4 and I am wondering if I would be able to use a third party vf? Does anyone know whether they would be compatible, if yes, what the difference would be between the Leica version and the other? Thanks. It's just a hotshoe mount, so yes, any VF that can be inserted in a standard flash hotshoe should work. Bear in mind though that this isn't coupled to the cameras electronics at all. So the only way you'll have any precise idea if what you're seeing through the viewfinder is what you'll capture will be to buy a viewfinder at either end of the focal range (24 to 60mm). Intermediate distances will require guesswork or some sort of creative solution (making marks on the lens barrel, etc.). Differences between the Leica version and others? Hard to say, although a viewfinder is similar to a lens in terms of being made of glass (or plastic if cheap) elements, some with aspherical surfaces, etc. Leica does this very, very well, and their viewfinders, whether external or internal, are known for brightness, high contrast, low distortion, and resistance to flare. So whether you'll get this quality from a third party is anyone's guess. Jeff.
cfc247 Posted November 7, 2008 Share #38 Posted November 7, 2008 Jeff, thanks for the helpful reply. Aren't Voigtlander vf supposed to be descent quality? They seem less expensive than the Leica though. I just saw a Lumix LX3 from this thread mounted with a Lumix vf, but I can't seem to track it down anywhere. Does anyone know about this? Also, will I be able to use a lx3 battery on the d4? They are just so cheap on ebay. Something like $13 versus $60 for the Leica version at a retailer. miami91 Posted November 7, 2008 Share #39 Posted November 7, 2008 Jeff, thanks for the helpful reply. Aren't Voigtlander vf supposed to be descent quality? They seem less expensive than the Leica though. Mark Yes, the Voigtlander's are decent quality. I'm currently using a Cosina/Voigtlander 25mm viewfinder on my D-Lux 4, just until I receive the Leica 24mm version I've pre-ordered. The CV came bundled with a lens, so I had it on hand. I'll be very interested to see if I perceive a quality difference once I receive the Leica version. There is certainly a quality difference between the CV viewfinders and the Leica M internal viewfinder, but this is an unfair comparison (Leica finder is brighter, framelines much more visible, etc.). If the Leica external viewfinder is comparable quality to the internal M viewfinder, it will have been money well spent. Jeff.
cfc247 Posted November 7, 2008 Share #40 Posted November 7, 2008 Jeff, how is the 25mm feel on the dlux 4? what is the aspect ratio of the vf? Any other comments on its usefulness would be helpful. Mark
