In addition, it no longer is a native 16x9 chip, so that aspect of it is gone (it merely crops). And if you believe these photos and posts, the lens wide open has issues that a quietly "fixed" by the raw conversion software Flickr: Discussing Barrel distortion being processed out by JPEG conversion? in Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 I think I'll pass and go with a Ricoh this time 'round... Yeah, but does the raw conversion software automatically correct it without telling you? Right now you are stuck using the bundled software which evidently "fixes" the distortion without any options. I think the issue is less that a 24mm equivalent lens has distortion, but rather they way that they deal with it. You can also talk with GX100/200 users and compare the lens behavior at 24mm. The bottom line is that there is no perfect lens/camera and they are all compromises. It just would be nice if the user knows what is going on and has options to deal with it. One of the causes of gripe in the community that Panasonic is advertising low distortion as a property of the lens (see here, at top) rather than as a combination of optical properties and software corrections. As for the software question, what I can tell reading the threads linked is that the correction is automatically applied in-camera with JPEG shots but NOT applied automatically in the supplied RAW converter. The fact that one needs to use a separate RAW converter (always a pain) might be a consideration for some, and even moreso given that the barrel distortion correction is unlikely to be included in Adobe or Apple's eventual RAW profile for the camera. The distortion at 24mm EFOV is very pronounced, but it seems to tame a lot by 35. Check the brick images on the Flickr discussion link posted above. I never used a canon wide angle, but the samples I've seen of distortion from the Dlux4/Lx3 are quite bad. the software does a fairly good job correcting it though. BTW, the new leather is case is exactly the sane as the D-Lux3 case except slightly larger. I have the brown one and it is supplied with a black 'shoelace' wrist strap with tan leather slider. Pete.
