Id urge anyone to be wary of V-Lux-1

if its anything like FZ50 it will disappoint you

wait and see the samples

Riley, do you mean the samples from the Leica website? or do you have your own?

I am seriously interested in Vlux since all the features like so attractive, but now I am not so sure. Do you think the noise level would be severe even if under ISO 400?

Thanks in advance!!!

i think i saw some sample images on leica's web site and couldn't believe how noisy and generally poor quality they were.

Dear Bradley,

I only got the samples from the website-provided brochure. They are in very small format.

Is that why I couldn't really tell the level of noise?

Or did you find some other samples?

Thanks in advance,

Tommy

hi Tommy

when I heard FZ50 had TTL i became very interested in it, but on release and when checking out the images, as keen as i was, i had to admit it wasnt good. there are 3 issues. so no, i dont own one.

1. yes it is noisy, well at least we think so, the venus engine appears to clean it up but does so by binning pixels and destroying the detail, badly

2. you cant turn the venus engine 'off', maybe it would be ok if you could turn it off and do your own processing with noise ninja, but you cant. and the default low setting is too high (hence the petition you may have seen around)

3. the only other work around is raw, but the camera has little if any raw buffer and shooting is dam slow.

now for some all would be ok if even in broad daylight at 80 - 100 iso things worked out. the thing is that isnt really true either. the venus engine seems to be at work removing bits of detail all over the place. like....when did you ever see noise in a persons hair in broad daylight ? (image #20 1st set)

one of the last hopes for this well featured camera is that Leica put their foot down and seriously tweaked the firmware, but i have to say Im not optimistic.

or at least lets put it this way. i recently paid a lot of money for a mint LC-1 and a short list of bits. i can use my oly flash in TTL and i will be trying something different for a wide adapter (the pana one cant be had here anymore) ....the sony vcl-hg0872 which is an industrial quality (read expensive!) video lens with .8x and 72mm thread, so 69 to 72mm stepring. the lens is massive at around 100mm dia and weighs more than my c7070 + flash <grin>

lastly, im so sorry to be the bearer of such news because i can see that the camera has the interest of more than a few, but you seem like a nice bunch and i felt i should warn you all before you get the awful shock like we had over at steves/panasonic forum

Riley,

Thank you so much for your expert comment!

Though I evny you for having such an experiement with Vlux, now that you have shown me the Panny forum with the pics blog, I am more aware of the noise level.

It seems to me though IMHO that before Leica announced M8, they wanted to raise the revenue so high they wanted to bring this Leicasonic cameras out too early before testing them out in the streets.

Of course, that is completely my own opinion, however, I do want to give them the benefit of doubt. Who knows that they may deliever the "Leica-Like" firmware???

But, for me... for now, I guess I will just have to wait until some of us do buy Vlux as soon as they hit the market, then ask their opinion!!!

Thank you again!!!

Dear D2 owners!

Even if D2 is 5M compared to Vlux 10M, which IMHO this doesn't mean anything, does D2 worth more than Vlux?

If I have the choice between D2 and Vlux 1, should I still get an used D2?

I have seen some reports comparing D2, Vlux 1, and D3, but from what I saw, D3 was much better (or less noisier), than Vlux 1 followed, and D2 came out with the more noisier quality.

Thanks in advance,

Tommy

Get the D2 you will enjoy it but that's a bias opinion....

truly hope that Leica are able to correct 'some' of the difficulties with these cameras

I doubt too much can be done the sensor is not up to scratch

Clutching at this stuff again!!!!?

i think if they allow users to turn venus OFF

it will make a difference to low iso images

if they only used the older 8mp or the 7mp sensor and the new barrel layout with TTL people would have been a lot happier, that was perhaps the FZ40 that never came

I think I'm going to live to regret not having got a D2/LC1 while they were available. It does appear from what I've seen of posted photos that it hit the sweet spot for compact cameras.

Regarding all the speculation over different Venus versions and tweaked firmware, am I missing something? Surely for those of us that shoot RAW, all of these are a matter of complete indifference. What the sensor produces is what it produces - picture, noise and all - and what we then get out of it then depends on the combination of RAW processing software and our own skill and judgment (limited in my case) in using it.

I'll be very glad to be proved wrong but I don't think we should hope for in-camera software salvation.

Just my £0.02/€0.03,

Jonathan

Yea but one would still like to run off a couple of jpegs of granddad dancing naked along the beach with a young nymphet on a cold winters morning even if the shrivelled shrivells and not giving a stuff what you think
