Guest stnami Posted October 25, 2008 Share #2 Posted October 25, 2008 Stuff like the G1 and the new Oly will kill off the digital rangefinder as soon as the bigger sensor guys step in with their own versions. Ageing eyes of the Leica brigade will not help ...............

MPJMP Posted October 26, 2008 Share #4 Posted October 26, 2008 Interesting. If this is possible, then perhaps a Leica re-branded version with dedicated M mount is in the works?? What do you think the crop factor would be on a G1 with M lens? The micro 4/3 sensor is a good bit smaller than the APS-C sized sensor in the M8, is it not? philipotto Posted October 26, 2008 Share #5 Posted October 26, 2008 Mike, micro 4/3, is the same sensor size as 4/3, which is 2X.
Riley Posted October 26, 2008 Share #6 Posted October 26, 2008 Stuff like the G1 and the new Oly will kill off the digital rangefinder as soon as the bigger sensor guys step in with their own versions. Ageing eyes of the Leica brigade will not help ............... that might not be as likely as you think the 'most' likely scenario (*IF* C&NorS get involved) is a fixed lens design, b/se they wont want to start another lens mount series next to that, any amount of useful zoom fixed lens will be a lot larger, perhaps the whole construct wont be much smaller than Sony R1 (and R1 was a reduced size APSC sensor) to summarise the probabilities: 1/ APSC would be fixed lens design 2/ a fixed lens that is a zoom will be larger than mFT options (like the 20/1.8 prime) 3/ a fixed lens that is not a zoom will lack utility against other mFT options
MPJMP Posted October 26, 2008 Share #7 Posted October 26, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Mike, micro 4/3, is the same sensor size as 4/3, which is 2X. Thanks for the clarification. So my Elmarit-M 28mm becomes a 56mm, my 50mm Summicron a 100mm, etc. Not sure I like that.
Guest stnami Posted October 26, 2008 Share #8 Posted October 26, 2008 2 or 3 small fixed lens cameras would be more than handy
Riley Posted October 26, 2008 Share #9 Posted October 26, 2008 yeah but Nokton 35/1.2 becomes 70/1.
Riley Posted October 26, 2008 Share #10 Posted October 26, 2008 2 or 3 small fixed lens cameras would be more than handy yes thats right but which lenses? inevitably the marketing answer would turn them to zooms which satisfies the most customers. There is no way around this, the best way to remain small is to start from small. Since they wont want to make a third series of lenses (Canon have told us this) you are more likely limited to a fixed lens. I reckon mFT kills that as a chance for those reasons. to me, the bigger implications are for 4/3rds itself, will it continue, will it change the latter would be smart, since if you really want small, you can have that with mFT
Guest stnami Posted October 26, 2008 Share #11 Posted October 26, 2008 I just don't see a long term life in the rangefinder, sure for the select monied I wanna be different but image wise Leica will just be one of the pack ps Two Hands......... K.I. was great, fantastic for car camping, we rented a house this time but next time a Autumn camping trip especially around the south east coast yai! Riley Posted October 26, 2008 Share #12 Posted October 26, 2008 FWIW: Leica would be best disposed to a mFT, but as an mF8 if you like mFT mount and M mount adapter (even that would sell on its own) hence just 3 new mFT lenses of a wider disposition, the M mounts being quite able to handle tele/portrait occasions; but the RF VF is troublesome to solve to a customer base more adverse to EVF on KI, sweet, have you done the Flinders yet? around October is the best time.. Guest stnami Posted October 26, 2008 Share #13 Posted October 26, 2008 I still reckon they are better off canning the m whatever, leave it as film stuff.......... go the S2 path as well concentrate on cameras for photographers. That's what the m series used to be about but that is yesterday. Stuff changes, the Digital RF has been compromised by a bunch of woollie wankers trying to play the old with the new technology and it is too fragile for hard use and a so so product. Too many rubbernecks at Flinders these day
Ruhayat Posted October 26, 2008 Share #14 Posted October 26, 2008 A fixed 40mm m4/3 would be nice. Something along the lines of the (currently mythical) Sigma DP2, but with non-telescoping lens and F2, please. Hmm. How about a fixed 40mm m4/3 D-Lux 5 but with a manual focus ring on the lens. That would be ultra-sweet. Actually, what I would prefer more is something like my current Ricoh GR-D. I have the 40mm attachment on it which I use perhaps 80% of the time, but whenever I need wider all I have to do is twist off the converter and -- voila! -- instant 28mm without having to fix another lens. Takes all of 5-10 seconds to be ready to shoot from 40mm to 28mm. Very, very convenient, I have to say.
tomasis7 Posted October 26, 2008 Share #15 Posted October 26, 2008 Stuff like the G1 and the new Oly will kill off the digital rangefinder as soon as the bigger sensor guys step in with their own versions. Ageing eyes of the Leica brigade will not help ............... it is hard kill off rangefinder with another camera without RF coupling. Bananas to peaches. Didnt you have eyes on Sigma P&S, PAnasonic, Fuji, Oly. All are photo cameras if you know.
