Very informative comments.

It seems to be almost impossible to compare things 1:1 because also the scanner is changing things and adding noise.

What about the highest optical resolution you can get (Zeiss claims: 400ln/mm) and a micro (ortho) film like this: http://www.spur-photo.com/dat_ort_ure.pdf

At the end of the chain: What you see is what you get. Out of the range of any scanner?

Or less extreme with an iso 25 B&W film (Rollei PAN25 or Efke 25).

A technical spec of a B&W micro film of 800ln/mm versus color 80ln/mm, a huge difference of course....

BTW, about the fact that the scanner degrades the image more than enlargement, here is a comparison.

Both pictures are 600 DPI scans of 30x40cm prints, resized from 3800 pixels to 900 pixels wide to be posted here.

First one is a print from a Fuji Sensia 100 slide made by a professional and using contrast masking. The slide was shot using a Leica R 28mm/2.8 at f/8.

The second one is a scan from a print I made on a Epson 2400 on Epson Premium Glossy paper. The scan was done at 4000 DPI on a Nikon LS4000 and slightly sharpened, no other postprocessing.

So maybe the guy who enlarged it for me does not know his job but so far, the scan+print is sharper and has more details.

P.S: the ilfochrome enlargement is quite nice though. Better colors in my opinion even if each new printer generation comes closer.
