steve kessel Posted October 22, 2008 Share #1 Posted October 22, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've just acquired a pre-asph Summilux 50, the type with the detachable hood. Has anyone fitted a filter to this type of lens? It says 43mm on the lens, a size I have from my Nokton 40/1.4. This screws on fine but I can't seem to slip the hood over the additional depth. Does it need filter with an extra slim surround or is there some special technique? Many thanks, Steve
Advertisement Posted October 22, 2008 Posted October 22, 2008 Hi steve kessel, Take a look here Filter on lux 50. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
cbretteville Posted October 22, 2008 Share #2 Posted October 22, 2008 Steve, I believe the pitch of the thread is different between the two lenses. My CV75 has a 43mm thread as does my 50 'lux. The B+W filter from my CV goes on the 'lux, but not the other way around. The Leica E43 filters have a groove that allows the hood to grip firmly, just like on the lens itself. The B+W filer doesn't have this groove. As there is a ledge in the hood keepping it from letting the filter through the gripping 'claws' on the hood can't reach the groove on the lens. - Carl
steve kessel Posted October 22, 2008 Author Share #3 Posted October 22, 2008 Carl Thanks for the info. I'll look out for a Leica E43 filter. Steve
lars_bergquist Posted October 23, 2008 Share #4 Posted October 23, 2008 Look, there are two different thread pitches on nominally 43mm filters: M43x0.5mm and M43x0,75mm. B+W (a division of Schneider Kreuznach) offers both. The CV lens uses the later one. But a hood can fail to attach properly even when filters have the correct thread pitch, because the rim is too deep, preventing the hood from seating. Current B+W filters have rims with less depth than the current 'Leica' filters (which do come from an outside supplier). Even the B + W filters with 0.5 thread do not work. Which filter are you looking for - UV or something else? Chrome or Black? I believe that Leica still offers the E43 UV in black, but it may cost you quite a lot. Th E43 in chrome is no longer made. If your lens is chrome, a chrome filter looks better. I may have a spare Leica E43 in black, send me a PM if you are interested. If you need a chrome filter, one option is to find an old Leica filter (with poor coating), remove the glass (easy), buy a quality filter like B + W MRC, remove the mount (a bit of work) and reinstall the glass in the Leica mount (easy). You will find both chrome and black filters on eBay from time to time. If you need UV/IR for Leica M8. the only option is Leica E43 which is available in chrome only. dkCambridgeshire Posted October 23, 2008 Share #6 Posted October 23, 2008 I had the same problem so dismantled the filters and reduced the mount thickness by rubbing them on abrasive paper .. only takes a few minutes rubbing ie with the abrasive stuck onto a piece of flat board ... then once thin enough to enable the hood to fit I painted the front of the modified mount and reassembled the filter. Filters come apart easily .. the glass is held in by a circlip. Cheers dunk

Cheers dunk[/quote] Not B + W. You need to cut open the mount. Leica is easy, though.
Butkevics Posted November 3, 2008 Share #8 Posted November 3, 2008 I have pre-asph summilux-M 1:1,4/50 mm. (serial Nr. 4010...). On the lens E46 is typed; so I ordered and successfully use B+W 46 MRC filters. Folding hood is not affected in any way
peter_n Posted November 4, 2008 Share #9 Posted November 4, 2008 It is the E43 lenses that have the issue. The E46 lenses use the current 0.75 thread pitch on the filter thread and are not a problem.
