Artorius Posted October 21, 2008 Share #1 Posted October 21, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am new to LTM cameras, but not to Leica. I recently purchased a IIIc stepper. I downloaded the IIIc manual, but there is no mention of the 3 rewind lever positions. There are three positions on my IIIc stepper, R, A, and I. What is the position I for? Art, The ' I ' is just a line indicating how far the rewind lever should be pushed. It is not a letter ' I '..... Actually, there are only ' 2 positions ' on the IIIc - full ' A ' for Aufnahme (Snapshot) and full ' R ' for Ruckspulen (Rewind) - same as on all other LTM bodies. I might beg to differ. If I set the rewind lever to the I position, something sounds like it is unwinding, like when the shutter is released. I am asking about a IIIc 1/2 stepper. I have a later IIIc(not a stepper) that doesn't have this position and doesn't make this noise.

The 'something' that is 'unwinding' is the tension on the shutter, which is released when the rewind lever is activated. It is posible that the 'stepped' war-time IIIc's shutter mechanism is slightly different from the later 'non-stepped' ones (why would Leitz go to the expense of re-tooling for a new housing, if the insides were the same) or, the tension on the shutter is diferent between the two bodies. I will stand behind my 'diagnosis' - the line is simply a line and not an ' I ' . Maybe others will chime in - Luigi, where are you? jc_braconi Posted October 21, 2008 Share #5 Posted October 21, 2008 hello, My IIIc wartime (steped) and postwar (unsteped) are standard A<----->R can you please post a picture of this detail?
earleygallery Posted October 21, 2008 Share #6 Posted October 21, 2008 I hesitated from adding to this thread as I didn't understand what was meant by 'stepper'. If you mean the lever on the top plate in front of the shutter release it is indeed simply a rewind lever - move it forward to rewind or back in to engage the shutter. That is all it does, as on any similarly equipped LTM.

doubice Posted October 22, 2008 Share #8 Posted October 22, 2008 Here are pictures of the two different IIIc top plates - should be self-explanatory. Best, Jan Welcome, dear visitor! It appears that when I tried to set the rewind lever it triggers the shutter. New to the LTM world, it didn't seem/sound right. I thank you and the others for all the insights. I hope this will not deter you from responding to future questions. Now, what is the...? Thanks to all that answered.

LeicaTom Posted March 22, 2009 Share #11 Posted March 22, 2009 "Stepper" = crazy American slang term invented by me *about 1992* and used by me and some other crazy English speaking people to describe the Leica IIIC *series one* or Leica IIIC with a raised rewind lever platform/AKA stepped rewind lever platform cameras, produced between March 1940 to June 1946.
