Any chance you can post of photos?!?!?!?

Thanks,

Ron

Sorry, I was busy yesterday. I've just took some quick pictures 15 min ago with a GRD II

The thickness of the sapphire glass is less obvious on the pictures due to the "macro", I hope you can see the differences with the old leather Leica half-case model and, concerning the vulcanite, when I saw the new one on the M8.2 at "La Maison du Leica", I asked Leica to replace the damaged one for something similar to the original model (I don't like the cheap "vinyl" on the M8.2). It's a bit different to the original one when you touch it, bit more rough and grainy. I don't know how to describe it.

Cheers,

ArtZ

PS: danyves and BerndReini, charlesphoto99 is right. You won't cut anybody's head with the new framelines (not even in France!). The overall performance of the new framelines has been improved. Wilson helped me out to make up my mind because, originally, I just wanted the sapphire upgrade only (mainly for warranty purposes). When I tested the new framelines at "La Maison du Leica" (my cameras were already at Solms), I didn't regret it. Concerning the shutter, I'm not convinced. I prefer to keep 1/8000 especially when the delayed shutter cocking is not included in the upgrade.

Yeah both the black & red dot cameras seem to have the same covering as the original M8 and not what I have seen as the new covering.

Ed, I don't think it's exactly the same vulcanite. It really feels different than the one I had before.

When Leica proposed me to replace the vulcanite because it was damaged, they asked me if I wanted the one on the M8.2. I said "Yes" (even if I had only see it on their web site). When I saw it in "real", my cameras were already at Solms and I called them to see if was possible to change because I don't like it (I don't like imitations... if it's not real leather, give something which don't pretend to be leather). They said "Of course" and they proposed me this one. I think the main difference with the original one is this one is more resistant, this is maybe why it feels different in my hands. I don't know... and to be honest, I don't care too much (except if it peels off like the first one...) ;)

This morning I took also another picture which I didn't included in my previous message (limited to 5). This picture shows the differences concerning the sapphire glass but you can see also the vulcanite. As you can see it's more "grainy" or rough...

perhaps they used a silent modification of the MP leather ;)

:)

I reported the problem with the vulcanite on February 2008. They said they were aware of this problem and new vulcanites and half-cases will be available in April/May.

When I called them during photokina show, we talked about vulcanites and they said they had "new models" since last time we spoke about it. They proposed me the one on the M8.2 and you know the end of the story ;)

Well Art I sincerely hope they didn't charge you anything for this.

  • 2 months later...
And in perfect condition!

Yes, my both M8s arrived today from Leica Camerakankenhaus!

RF is spot on (just perfect in every way), new frame lines (MUCH more accurate than the old ones with 50, 75 and 90mm lenses), new LCD cover (the sapphire glass is less prominent than the old one, only a very slim part of it is out of the rear part of the camera -nice!), new top plate, new signature on the top plate (wow! they did a fantastic engraving job), new vulcanite, new "Black Dot", new model leather half-cases and, above all, a happy customer.

Ahhh... As I forgot to send my warranty cards, they have included two new warranty cards with the new expiration date of both cameras after the upgrade (June and Septembre 2010)

Yes... I'm happy... Thank you, CS... this time you got it right!

I know, I shouldn't quote myself but this is an upgrade of my first post...

All my Leica gear (M8s and Leica lenses) is at Solms... After upgrading the bright lines on both cameras, I checked focus at 0.7m and infinite... everything seemed to be perfect... I was very happy the upgrade... but in Costa Rica I realized that intermediate focus was completely wrong: all pictures taken between 2 and 5 meters (depending on the lenses) @ f<4 were out of focus! Leica asked me to send back all my gear (including all lenses)... I hope to get it back before my trip to Spain on December 29th... Grrrr...

Last Monday (16/12/2008) Leica picked up at my home all my gear and they will adjust all my lenses and bodies. The most funniest thing is I got today by post the necessary labour cost (0 €, no problem here) but they say on both M8:

necessary labour costs

-Clean sensor

-Adjust range finder

-Clean range finder (I thought it was clean! and they probably cleaned it during bright lines upgrade ?!)

-Firmware upgrade (both cameras were on firmware 2.002 when they left Paris for Solms last Monday ?!)

-Adjustment of all parts

-We make test pictures to check quality cleaning and control

Well, we'll see next week...

I wouldn't be fair if I don't say I got also a very nice Leica Christmas card from Sonja Becker with lots of nice words... and with Xtmas wishes from Dr. Andreas Kaufmann (much nicer and appropriate than in the email we received all!)

I think you all need to go and actually try the new framelines. They don't cut off anything at close range (that I could tell) ......... The new framelines are better and you won't lose a thing.

YESS! I am happy someone else points this out. It is what I also discovered. The new frames are most definitely not "set for 2m" despite what Leica publishes. If it were true then they would cut off at close distances, but they do not. IMHO Leica has merely revised them as they should have been from the start. Calling it "2m" serves maybe to please the people who were asking for framelines set at 2m, whilst diverting attention from the fact the lines were miscalculated in the beginning. The new lines are very similar to those in the M7 and MP. As you said, nothing cut at close distance, somewhat loose at far distance. The original M8 lines were already somewhat loose at close, and at far distance more liberal than MSNBC :D
