Hi,

Is it normal that the lens hood fo the Summicron M 35 f/2 ASPH is moving with a filter mounted on the lenses? Is there any way to fix it?

I am not quite sure what exactly you mean with "moving with a filter mounted on the lenses."

 

In order to mount a filter, the hood must be removed; when placed back on top of the filter, the hood is again as stable on the lens as before (with some occasional tiny movements being not annoying--at least to me).

 

By the way, when mounting a filter, remember to hold it from the rim using thumb and pointer, and rotate appropriately. Some filter frames are not so robust.

Annibale the lens hood should fit over the filter and lock back on the lens. I just took mine off and got it back on again, but with some difficulty. The little lugs at the top and bottom of the hood should fit into the slots on the top and bottom of the front of the lens. It is actually quite tough to get the hood on properly so try moving it around a little bit as you push the hood back onto the front of the lens. Keep working it and it should slip over the filter, the lugs go into the slots and the hood teeth will engage the thin slot cut in the barrel of the lens.

Of course I removed the lens hood before mounting.

I'm going to buy some B+W filters, so I tried an old Skylight in bayonet type; it seems that the two lugs of the hood can't go in the proper lens position for the thickness of the filter and the hood teeth are engaged to the filter itself; so the hood moves in a rotation around the filter. Will I have the same bad surprise buying the B+W Filters?

I've seen several examples where the B+W filters are too 'thick' or 'tall' to fit inside the Leica hoods. The hood for the v1 Tri-Elmar is an example. My hood came apart and had to be glued back together. When I managed to get it attached it wouldn't lock properly into place as the filter is too tall. Had to get a 55mm Leica filter for that lens. When I got my 24/2.8 I just ordered a Leica filter with it as it uese the same hood as the v1 MATE. I know I've had the problem with other lenses too, but off the top of my head I can't remember which ones.

 

I have used B+W filters (both b&w correction and uv/ir filters) on my 35/2 and can't remember having these problems there.

I have used B+W filters on the 2/35 ASPH and there are no problems. I prefer B+W to Leica filters due to their apparently more effective multicoating and they are also very easy to clean (for some reason the surface looks new even after repeated cleaning so the surface must be very hard).

 

Carl is right to point out that B + W filters are too thick for the 21mm, 24mm and Tri-Elmar v1, which all use the same hood, and you cannot attach the hood with the filter in place.

Assuming you are referring to the standard square hood, then it shouldn't be able to rotate with a filter mounted. If you are using a B+W 'slim' filter it's possible that the lens hood won't fiit correctly. If you are using one of these filters try a standard one. I've used many B+W filters on my 35mm ASPH Summicron without there being a problem with the hood.

He's wrong about the 24mm at least. I use a B+W filter on that lens. The lens hood is a tight fit, but it will mount correctly.

Steve, I broke the hood trying to mount it over a B+W filter on my MATE same hood, same filter. It is made of two parts an they separated. There may be differences in the productions, I don't know but the fit is so tight that I'd stick to my statement that the Leica filer is a better choice also for the 24.

Carl, maybe they changed the specification of the hood slightly. By tight fit I meant that when fitting the hood everything has to be exactly aligned. Certainly with the hood I have there was no need to push or force the hood in order for it to fit.

 

When I first tried to fit the hood I was convinced that it wouldn't fit, but Robert Stevens mentioned a trick of slightly unscrewing the filter - just a fraction of a turn - that allowed the hood to be fitted without any problem. Since then I've managed to remove and fit the hood without having to resort to this trick.

I don't think so. I have a B+W MRC UV filter on my 35/2 ASPH and the hood fits over it (just) as I described above.

 

I also use a B+W MRC UV filter on my 24/2.8 ASPH and the hood fits over that too. As someone mentioned, it is a tight fit but it fits.
