My nephew is reporting problems transferring pictures from his Leica DLux 3 to his Apple Macbook. He finds recent difficulty in not being able to transfer shots, some shots seem broken, and seem to mess up his operating system. He gets a -36 error, unable to copy...

Have there been other such reported problems, or has there been a Leica software update that could be relevant?

Until now he has had 9 months of trouble free operations.

Is he connecting directly to the Mac using USB to the D-Lux 3?

1. If so, try taking the SD card out and transferring via a card reader. That should tell you if the camera is faulty or not.

2. If the same problem persists using the card reader, try a second card and see if the same thing happens. This should tell you if the first card is faulty or not.

3. If the same thing persists using the second card, then there's something wrong with his Mac.

If he's got an Intel-based Macbook and is also running Windows on a DOS-formatted partition, it could be a virus on the Windows side corrupting the drive -- this happened to me once.

My suspicions are that the SD card might be corrupted. It has happened to me once. Try another computer to see if the problem is corrected, as suggested by another, but more than likely the problem is the card.

One fix is to reformat the card in the camera, which usually corrects the corruption issue, unless the card is damaged. The down side of course is the loss of the images on the card.

Gentlemen, thanks for this. I have fed this back and he does use the card reader, and the corruption issue only happens periodically. Mainly, for example, when backing up with Time Machine he gets the error message then and has to find and remove the corrupted image. I have suggested reformatting but can one do that with the Dlux? I know one can with M8 which I have, but cannot see it on menu of my Panasonic LX1.
