Shadow Blaster Posted October 7, 2008 Share #1 Posted October 7, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I would like to get the 24mm Elmarit f2.8 but it appears to have an E55 filter size, which would appear to render my Leica universal polarizer useless. Can anyone let me know if it is possible to use a polarizer with this lens? I really like the 24mm but might go with the 28mm if I can't use a polarizer. Thanks in advance for what I know will be helpful advice. Cheers, John S.

ron110n Posted October 7, 2008 Share #2 Posted October 7, 2008 Yes, you can use a Polarizer, but the result? It will only polarize in the center. Best result for M is 35mm.
Guest zwicko Posted October 7, 2008 Share #3 Posted October 7, 2008 Ron, why should it only polarize in the center? John, of course you can use a polarizer with that particular lens. There are plenty of polarizers for E55 threads. For example, Leica´s own (#18671) or B+W filter (they also offer slim versions that do not vignette with wide angles). Cheers, Z. guywalder Posted October 7, 2008 Share #4 Posted October 7, 2008 Ron, why should it only polarize in the center? I think what Ron is getting at is that polarisation depends on angel of incidence to the filter (please excuse the simplistic explanation), and since wide angle lenses focus light from such a wide view (Doh) the way that light is polarised varies across the frame. The wider the angle the more obvious the variation.... That said, i have happily used a polarising filter on a 24mm (albeit not Leica), happy except for the vignetting that is. I have used a polariser on the 21mm which is the same filter size, it seemed to work OK and suppressing the reflections in the surface of some water. It is a Cenei 55mm filter I have had since I had the R4. Gerry
