Advertisement Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 Hi jpattison, Take a look here Getting C41 processed is getting more and more difficult. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jpattison Posted October 3, 2008 Share #22 Posted October 3, 2008 By the way, Manchester is not in Lancashire, It is in the county of Greater Manchester. Boy, that gets me mad!!! John
kenneth Posted October 3, 2008 Share #23 Posted October 3, 2008 Hi Bill, So we're not colour blind or hallucinating and our monitors are not faulty! I see the blueish tones, but much of the sky and some of the walkway/handrail appear magenta, do you see that too Bill? Ken, do you see the magentas? Do you know, I think I can. I just don't go with computer manipulation. If it is not attainable in a darkroom, it's not attainable in my eyes

StS Posted October 4, 2008 Share #26 Posted October 4, 2008 There was a shop on Wilmslow Road in Didsbury town centre in 2005. However, I can't find it on the list of Manchester labs any more.
StS Posted October 4, 2008 Share #27 Posted October 4, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have taken the time to befriend the manageress and instead of ranting at her for spots on my first set of negatives I showed her the camera I was using (my IID) and explained why I was keen to get decent results. Absolutely no problem I had a similar technique in my standard lab back in Stuttgart, they had actually several minlabs in their store (making it a maxilab?). The manager advised me the ladies handling the machines would be susceptible to bribery by sweets. The minilab I use in Hamburg is in a cellar shop crammed with photo stuff. They know how to handle their machine, though.
masjah Posted October 4, 2008 Share #28 Posted October 4, 2008 Manchester will always be in Lancashire to a Yorkshireman, just like Kingston upon Hull will always be in the East Riding Agreed, and probably to Lancastrians too, though, as a Yorkshireman, I can't speak on their behalf! Likewise for Kingston upon Hull. (Even though technically Kingston upon Hull is now one of those Metropolitan Borough thingees - or whatever they call them - and therefore administratively some sort of county in its own right.) At one point Hull was in that bastard hybrid called Humberside, which thankfully is no more. The political administration flavour of the month will doubtless change again (and again) but the East Riding is where Hull was, and the East Riding is where it stays. However, I can't find it on the list of Manchester labs any more. That's still there. They are the only people in Manchester who process E6 on the premises too, now, although they don't do it every day anymore unless you take in a bucket full. I passed a SnappySnaps in Chester this morning, whom I'd forgotten.

earleygallery Posted October 4, 2008 Share #31 Posted October 4, 2008 I passed a SnappySnaps in Chester this morning, whom I'd forgotten. I was going to suggest Snappy Snaps, they do just about everything - C41, traditional B&W and E6. I think they also offer cross processing at some brances. Quality has mostly been excellent, one incident with a scratched neg but I couldn't say 100% it was their fault.
abrewer Posted October 4, 2008 Share #32 Posted October 4, 2008 I used to be really happy with the Target where I lived last year. Then I moved. They butcher film. Literally, they expose, etc. pulling it out of the cans and then they proceed to provide really crappy scans that aren't even centered on the frames. Sounds like some retraining or attitude adjustment for the troops may be in order Talk to the store manager I've found Target to be keen on customer satisfaction if they're aware of a problem
Schwarzer_M3 Posted October 5, 2008 Share #33 Posted October 5, 2008 Hi Bill, my monitor is showing the magentas as well, I'm using a colour-calibrated Acer LCD screen. Might this be the difference, CRT or LCD? I'd like to think there is no difference, otherwise buying and using the EUR 100 Colorspider set proves useless... Might this be the difference, CRT or LCD? I'd like to think there is no difference, otherwise buying and using the EUR 100 Colorspider set proves useless... Hmm... Can those who are seeing magenta please do this test? http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/barnack-s-bar/65364-test-your-eye-colour.html I can't see magenta, on three different screens - two lcd (one of which is a thumping great TV) and an ancient CRT. Let me know if you score lower than me! Regards, Bill
guywalder Posted October 5, 2008 Share #35 Posted October 5, 2008 Can those who are seeing magenta please do this test? I see light magenta in the sky, and a bit of blue on the bridge surface. I got a score of 8 in the test (on an uncalibrated laptop screen)
Leitzmac Posted October 5, 2008 Share #36 Posted October 5, 2008 Hi Bill, Did OK in the test, but still see the colours in the pic. Is it Greyscale, RGB or CMYK?
bill Posted October 5, 2008 Share #37 Posted October 5, 2008 Hmmm... It's sRGB. Regards, Bill
Ludwig Gretch Posted October 5, 2008 Share #38 Posted October 5, 2008 I'm pretty fortunate, in that if I take a C41 film in to the nearby suburban Tesco early in the morning, I can get the negs back, - clean and acceptable, the same evening for the princely sum of 99p.! In the city center, Jessops do a reasonable job in under one hour, with a cheapo 'free' film thrown in, but charge nearly £4!!. BTW, - admittedly my flat bed scanner and printer are not 'high end', but I do find my best b+w scans, and resultant prints have come from XP2 negs., I wish the Ilford dedicated dev. kit that was around in the eighties ( when it was XP1 ) was still available, - anyone remember this?, my normal mono films have been souped at the kitchen sink for over forty years, so I'm just about comfortable with it! - even if my wife is not!! Cheers, Dave.
Leitzmac Posted October 5, 2008 Share #39 Posted October 5, 2008 Hmmm... It's sRGB. Regards, Bill I'm afraid that my photoshop experience is limited, so please excuse me if this seems a bit basic or even non-sensical, but have you tried: Converting the picture to 'greyscale' converting back to 'RGB' Going to colour balance and slowly adding blues or cyans according to your taste (I think you mentioned you wanted a cool feel to the picture) through the shadows, mid tones and highlights? I hope you don't mind, but curiosity got the better of me, I wanted to see how it might look and most importantly whether it still had all the colours on my screen. See your picture below, following the process above it seems to have a more neutral feel, mind you I'd always rather look at a black and white print on cooltone paper, never seems quite right on screen (I can still see hints of other colours)! Nice pic by the way, is it the bridge formerly known as 'wobbly' in London? Welcome, dear visitor! DTD Posted October 9, 2008 Share #40 Posted October 9, 2008 There was a shop on Wilmslow Road in Didsbury town centre in 2005. However, I can't find it on the list of Manchester labs any more. DS Colour Labs? Do a good cheap internet service for prints. Haven't noticed if they still do film: Digital photo printing made easy Jessops C41 processing did vary enormously – the Deansgate one was usually OK (I suppose because the lab was there in the store). Until recently I always used Ilford XP2 processed as a C41 film and used the enprints as 'contacts' to decide which to scan. Recently I've started using Ilford Delta 100 and to my great shame send it off to a bloke from the back of AP for dev and contact printing and then scan myself.
