tiltyourhead Posted September 30, 2008 Share #1 Posted September 30, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello All, I am new to this forum and have a quick question. I have just bought a really nice Digilux 2 online on eBay. From what I know the sensor has not been replaced and is not having trouble at this time. Does anyone know how long Leica is going to be fixing failed sensors? I didn't spend too much for this camera (US $445) however I would like a camera that I will be able to use for several years. Thanks in advance for your answers. I'm hoping to gain some good knowledge from this site.

wparsonsgisnet Posted September 30, 2008 Share #2 Posted September 30, 2008 ... Digilux 2 ...does anyone know how long Leica is going to be fixing failed sensors? ... Tilt, there is no official statement about duration of warranty from Leica, but at this time, D2 sensors are being fixed under warranty. Mine was replaced recently at no charge (for the sensor replacement). In addition, they wanted to fix a couple of other things to the tune of $140 (and, since they're Leica, and I'm a schlub, I said yes -- they DO know how a camera should work). It came with a 1-yr warranty (nice). I'm pleased to have it again. In addition to making fine pictures it's SILENT! "Silent" is even more quiet than my M6 and M4. Silent/ce is Beautiful. Enjoy the camera, it's a peach! Regards,
stuny Posted September 30, 2008 Share #3 Posted September 30, 2008 Landon - Welcome to the Forum, and I hope we get to see your D2 pictures before long. I believe Leica is still replacing sensors, even on second hand cameras. You should have it arround for quite some time. The limiting factor might be how long they manufacture batteries for this camera (or the D3 -- essentially interchnageable batteries). You might want to buy a space, charge it, and store it in the refrigerator. Recharge it again every few months.
tiltyourhead Posted September 30, 2008 Author Share #4 Posted September 30, 2008 Thanks for the info about the sensor repair program. Tell me more about this battery trick though. I can buy a battery and store it in the fridge?!? I'll post some photographs as soon as the camera arrives. I have wanted this camera ever since I first saw it. Prices have just started to come down though. I am going to use this camera is a daily shooter/travel camera. I am currently shooting weddings with a Canon DSLR system. I just really hate lugging my 20D around on vacation. When shooting film (which rarely happens) I have a nice little Contax G1. I love the size of the rangefinder. Anyway, thanks again for the info. wparsonsgisnet Posted September 30, 2008 Share #5 Posted September 30, 2008 Thanks for the info about the sensor repair program. Tell me more about this battery trick though. I can buy a battery and store it in the fridge?!? ... /QUOTE] I would recommend that you carry the 2nd battery with you and use the two alternatively (as they become discharged). I have a backup battery for my D2 and when one runs down, I put the second one in and recharge the 1st. A second battery is highly recommended for sound sleeping. I bot the Panasonic version for my second one. It's about 1/2 the price of the Leica -- and the same battery, of course.
stuny Posted September 30, 2008 Share #6 Posted September 30, 2008 I agree with Bill, and based on your shooting pattern it might pay to have one or two more stored in a plastic bag in your refrigerator. I have five for my D2, and rotate them in and out of the refrigerator, and take as many with me as I anticipate I'll need for a situation -- Such as, on the Skeleton Coast of Namibia I could not count on being able to recharge frequently so I brought all the spare batteries I had (5 for the D2, 3 for the DMR) for the two cameras I took on that trip. daveleo Posted September 30, 2008 Share #7 Posted September 30, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) hello there my D2 sensor is being replaced free off charge (in NJ) and the camera is way out of warranty (4.5 years old .... though i am the original owner) they are also replacing the top plate i dented for a very reasonable extra cost. an extra battery is well advised ..... i also got the panasonic battery as the backup and there is no difference. wonderful camera !
