Giulio Zanni Posted October 3, 2006 Share #1 Posted October 3, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) I would be grateful if anybody could explain me how the viewfinder of the new tri-elmar functions. There are two dials on top of the viewfinder. One sets the focal length while I am not clear about the second. As far as I understood should set the parallax compensation. However I am not clear on how it woks. Does it need to be set manually? On which basis? Or does it automatically change when changing the focal length? Many thanks, Giulio

earleygallery Posted October 3, 2006 Share #2 Posted October 3, 2006 No, I think one is for tuning the others volume

marknorton Posted October 3, 2006 Share #4 Posted October 3, 2006 Parallax compensation is independent of focal length, as you close focus, the position of the frame shifts to compensate for the parallax error. On the new finder, one knob will select one of 5 frames and the second will shift them within the viewfinder based on the distance you dial in. Given the settings on this second dial, if you are shooting at greater than 2m, you can just set infinity and forget it.
Giulio Zanni Posted October 4, 2006 Author Share #5 Posted October 4, 2006 Thanks, now it's clearer. However, this complicates things. In photojournalism you usually shoot within 1 and 3m. Having to look at the distance and adjusting the parallax accordingly would slow down things.... Giulio
marknorton Posted October 4, 2006 Share #6 Posted October 4, 2006 The framelines on a Leica M have only ever been approximate, you get nothing like the framing accuracy you do with a dSLR so I think in practice, you'll just need to zone focus, set the finder to 2m or infinity and shoot away. It will be interesting though to see how much the frame moves as you turn the dial - all the ones at Photokina were locked on 21mm so I couldn't judge. That will be the best indicator of how much latitude you need to allow.
earleygallery Posted October 4, 2006 Share #7 Posted October 4, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) I doubt it will be much of an issue given the focal lengths and margin which I understand is already taken into account (the v/f frames are tight). If one was shooting at typically closer distances I'd set an average value, 1.5M for e.g. & if its the M8 you have the benefit of instant review.
