Camera for tour - Digilux 2 or V-Lux 1

I have a C-Lux 2, Digilux 2 and Kodak/Nikon DSLR which is very very big and heavy.

I will be on South East Asia tour next month for a week and wondering which camera would be good for that - Digilux 2 or V-lux 1. I will take C-Lux 2 with D2 or V-lux 1 and camera size is not a matter to me for this case.

I've been using Digilux 2 for about a month and happy with it - very good in good light condition but shadow areas are very noisy and ISO 400 is almost useless.

I found V-lux 1 with big zoom and ISO up to 1600 (would be good for indoor candid shot) . It looks very good (I read review of FZ-50 on dpreview).

Has any one used both of the camera?

How is IQ of V-Lux 1?

any comparision with Digilux 2 please?

Thanks in advance.

Ed;)

My vote would be for the V-Lux 1, mainly because of the more generous focal range and generally sturdier build (well, it *feels* sturdier than the Digilux 2, anyway). Whereabouts are you going? If you're coming to Malaysia let me know... I'll take you 'round Kuala Lumpur.

Plus, the Digilux 2 is just so precious, you wouldn't want anything to happen to it whereas the V-Lux 2... meh, can always get the new Panasonic G1. In terms of picture quality, they're about the same, but in terms of colours the V-Lux 1 does look more digital (ie, more vibrant and has a 'plasticky' sheen) than the Digilux 2 files to me -- the yellows and blues, especially.

Hi Ed, I have a similar decision to make for my Cambodia/Vietnam trip.

Either I take my Pana-L1(aka D3) or D2 (plus D-lux2 as a backup). Given the high heat/humidity I probably go with my D2 for it's light weight (0.7Kg) , rather than the L1 (1.1Kg) which is SO MUCH HEAVIER.

Considering your situation, I would be surprised if V-lux1's triple density image sensor 26MP/cm2 was less noisy than that of the D2's 8MP/cm2. See the following :

Digital Cameras Side-by-Side, 2 cameras: Digital Photography Review

However image stabilisation on the V-lux1 would be a bonus, at long telephoto focal lengths it has been reported that you will still need a tripod. I always carry a pocket tripod for my trips.

Bounce flash of the D2 is much better than the V-lux1 flash.

SDHC support on V-lux1 will allow you to carry 16GB SDHC cards over multiple 2GB cards for D2 (which I am accumulating,)

Maybe you should have a peep at pbase-dot-com for samples shots....I like that site as there are lots of very average user photo's there, and you get a better idea of how bad the users and cameras can be..... (I'm no saint....I only like 5% of my own photos)

I find the V-Lux to be the better "all-in-one" travel camera for reasons mentioned above. Never know when the extra zoom will be needed.

D2 is a more classic RF type of experience.

Best would be to take both and leave a pair of shoes home.

I have a digilux 2 and think is is a great camera, but when my son, in the air force, wanted a great camera for his world travels, I did not hesitate in buying him the v-lux. He loves it and has become much more interested in his photos. The great zoom range and stabalizer makes him look like he has 20 years taking photos.

I have an Oly E-300 which, admittedly, is far from the same camera as a Digilux 3, but there are similarities (same sensor, I think, and similar form factor). I also have a V-Lux 1. I'd take the V-Lux 1 due to its size/weight and also its all-in-one versatility. I haven't found anything above ISO 400 (on the Leica) to be too useful, but if you work within the camera's limitations, it does a fine job. Overall, my Oly probably has better IQ (depending on which lenses I'm using, of course).

And, btw, my Oly flashes work TTL with the Leica, so bounce flash is quite easy.
