for the same money you can get 5d mkii, an L series 24mm F/1.4 AND an 85mm 1.2

And possibly a tenth of the fun.

At the risk of sounding like a Leica fan boy (again!), I think we should be celebrating what Leica do superbly well, not comparing them to a Japanese system that's knocked out by the million.

Why buy a 50mm Summicron rather than an £70 Canon 50mm? There's no end to the comparisons that could be made. I've found myself in the fortunate position where I can afford to buy Leica equipment, I intend to continue. Even if the top end stuff is beyond me, I can recognise the excellence that it demonstrates.

x
but 4k is so much money.......

and both of those lenses are pretty damm good by anyones standards

I don't know about the 85mm but unless you're thinking of the 24mm f/1.4 Mk2 it's pretty weak until you stop it down to f/4 or so. Kinda a waste of money if the f/1.4 performance isn't there, and that's my standards.

I think we are all going to be quite happy next week. There truly is "Another", we should all know soon enough.

Annoyingly cryptic, I know. It makes the waiting that much more fun.

Kent

BTW- When then week is done maybe we can all take a deep breath after the 8.2 price hand wringing and acknowledge that this little company has done a nice job this year of hanging in there. Lets see the rounded out product line and then judge how they've done.

That said, I have enjoyed reading the other threads debating the new M.

I can't wait to see some results from a 21 Summilux, w_i_d_e open. I can almost guarantee that people will have their socks blown off by the wide angle, and narrow dof in the same image. It will be fantastic, and worth every penny, to some people. THIS is what Leica is all about. Pushing the boundaries, not giving a "me too" experience.

I'd but a digital CL, too, but I'd really, REALLY want a 21 Summilux to go with it...

I agree Andy. The Noctilux is too long on an M8 and the Nikon 28/1.4 has been a revelation on the D3. I think the 21/1.4 is the most exciting of the new lenses. Just think what it would do on a FF camera!

The Noctilux is too long on an M8...

That's why I was expecting the new Noctilux to be 35mm - a more useful focal length for many on the M8, and less critical when focussing than 50mm. As it turns out I couldn't have afforded it anyway.

In a way I don't want to see the results from the new Summiluxes. I have a feeling they would provide the beginning of a long, and expensive, slippery slope.

And possibly a tenth of the fun.

errrr fun ? what the hell are you on about

i'm talking about getting the job done here......

for some of us its a job and you have X number of pounds to deploy for a certain amount of kit

fine, leica will of course sell some of this kit to the whimsical rich man who wants to take a few terrible pictures of a couple of flowers and one of his kids at disneyland etc... but get this into your head, if they are to survive then their products have to make sense in the global market. There is only one Brad Pitt and only one Eric Clapton and in any case, that market sector is an ageing dying breed. The memory of Bresson gets dimmer as every year goes on and they just won't be able to trade on that whole M mystique to the future youth forever. Your kids kids will throw your M away or ebay it for a playstation IX.

No, as much as you don't like it, their prodcuts have to make sense and stack up against Canon, Nikon, Hasselblad, mamiya, Sinar ... the whole damm lot in fact. Its the digital age now, a new era.... hell, I love fast glass, I shoot wide open more than 80% of the time but i'm honest enough to admit that its just not of the same significance anymore. With stabilising lenses and the sensor technology the way its progressing at the moment F/1.4 is an antequated joke to many other photographers. So get used to it... or is it that you want them to die a very quick and painful death in teh next 4 years ?

And as a footnote, no one said the canon lenses would be as good as either of the 2 new summiluxes (but don't worry... it would be close and 99% of the time teh art director won't notice a difference), i'm just demonstrating how ludicrous the new prices are.. which they are. Fanboy or not you have to admit that the prices are just silly... even the dealers admit to that much.

I love using my M system, and I hate huge DSLRs but when all is said and done its a business and sense has to intervene and prevail at some point.
