I see it replaced the 8000th of a second on the shutter dial, but what does it do for you? Doug

Doug It sets the white balance to "AUTO" (in case you can't figure out how to go into the menu and do it yourself), and then sets the camera in A mode, and then also sets ISO automatically depending on some as-yet-unknown algorithm, probably dependent on the shutter speed (switches to a higher ISO when the shutter speed drops below someone's idea of what the minimum shutter speed is that the "typical" user can handhold without shaking). Probably ties into the lens focal length assuming the lens is coded...no idea if S mode works with an uncoded lens or not as of yet. Interesting that although we now have this additional auto-everything mode, we still don't have a menu for inputting the lens info manually. A clear indication of what kind of user Leica is aiming for, IMO.
dcoombs Posted September 17, 2008 Author Share #3 Posted September 17, 2008 Thanks. I suppose the idea is that all you do is focus and "leave the driving to us". Not exactly a feature that appeals to me, since I'm used to operating in manual mode anyway. So be it. Maybe someone out there will find it useful. adan Posted September 17, 2008 Share #4 Posted September 17, 2008 There are 18 positions in the electronic switching beneath the M8 shutter dial (I guess 34 or 35 if you count the half-stop shutter speeds). Anyway, a fixed number built into the circuit board. Going to a 1/4000th shutter, Leica had a choice of leaving a big blank spot in the dial between 4000 and A, or doing SOMETHING with it. They couldn't just respace the numbers without an expensive underlying circuitry change as well. I have no use for the (S)tupid mode, but at least it adds something for some photographers - more than a blank spot on the dial. In fast moving situations, it may be a marginal substitute for not having an ISO button when the ISO needs to change fast. At least they didn't add a "mountain" or "flower" or "running guy" mode! Scott Root Posted September 18, 2008 Share #6 Posted September 18, 2008 The upcoming firmware upgrade is evidently going to include and auto ISO. So, how is this different than the Snapshot mode?

Auto ISO with setting of upper ISO limit would be good!
adan Posted September 18, 2008 Share #9 Posted September 18, 2008 Scott: Where do you get that information? Are you sure you get auto ISO in classic M8s and not just with the M8.2 (i.e. only with S mode do you get auto-iso?)
Scott Root Posted September 18, 2008 Share #10 Posted September 18, 2008 Reid Review's review of the 8.2 includes a chart that clearly indicates that auto ISO is part and parcel to the upcoming firmware update, but the chart also indicates that the Snapshot feature cannot be introduced as an upgrade. It would be nice for someone to explain the auto ISO feature and whether a person can enter a ISO upper limit and what the Snapshot mode does and takes into consideration up and beyond the auto ISO feature. Perhaps Sean Reid can expound on this. Scott Scott: Where do you get that information? SJP Posted September 18, 2008 Share #11 Posted September 18, 2008 I thought it was the smile detection mode, if you try taking a pic with no-one smiling it fries the main processor. Not covered by any warranty as this is clearly misuse. Smile or off to Solms.

Scott I'll explain it...and you don't have to pay me a cent In an M8 with the latest firmware, if you enable auto-ISO, set the white balance to auto, and set the shutter dial to auto exposure, you have "snapshot mode" according to the definition of it supplied by Leica in reference to the M8.2. Evidently the "S" position on the shutter dial is for those who can't figure out how to make those 3 settings independently, and evidently it was a Leica marketing decision (vs technical) not to give people the function of 'S' if they get the shutter upgrade, just as it is clearly a marketing decision not to offer the delayed-recock with the shutter upgrade. I think it is more a hardware decision. Where the M8.2 will have slightly different hardware from the M8C or M8.1 (C for classic, .1 for the upgraded shutter in a C M8). In 2 years they must of updated parts of the electronics, IF they aren't totally brain dead. I also suspect the M8.2 will run faster then the M8C or .1. Yes but since they have to take the camera pretty much apart to do the shutter and frameline upgrades, it seems obvious it's a purely marketing decision not to offer to replace whatever little switches or circuit boards would allow the shutter-dial-activated "S" mode and the delayed recock.
