Camera Obscura Posted September 17, 2008 Share #1 Posted September 17, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have had an R4 for the last 20 something years, received from my dad at that time, so some great sentimental value. It has never been a very reliable camera and did block every so often. It has now completely stopped and I can only take pictures at the manual 100 setting, whatever you call that. The question now is whether to repair, or look for a second hand R5 or R7 or so. Anyone have any idea how much it would cost to repair the R4? I have an R8 as backup, which is a great camera and much more handy than one would think. I however like a second film (B&W or saturated film for instance) backup and also like the earlier R's for their smaller size. Any thoughts? Advertisement Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 Hi Camera Obscura, Take a look here R4 Problems. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
earleygallery Posted September 17, 2008 Share #2 Posted September 17, 2008 Hi Please clarify what the problem is. Do you mean the meter isn't working at anything other than 100 ISO or the shutter will only fire at a certain speed? Have you checked the batteries? Assuming its just the meter, I'd use it as is with a handheld meter. A repair is unlikely to be viable but most estimates are free (not from Leica though). Camera Obscura Posted September 18, 2008 Author Share #3 Posted September 18, 2008 Hi James No idea what the problem is, but the shutter works at the 100 speed setting. It is not the batteries. Have changed them and checked. I guess it is just the electronics that have given up completely now. Cheers, John
martinvath Posted September 18, 2008 Share #4 Posted September 18, 2008 Hi John Just don´t send it to Leica in Solms, it´ll cost You an arm and a leg. I had a R4 and resently got a price on CLA and repair of rear film window - $ 700! Bought a fine R-E for about half the price instead:-) Kind regards Martin
earleygallery Posted September 18, 2008 Share #5 Posted September 18, 2008 It sounds like - possibly - the electronic shutter has packed up and its firing on the manual/flash speed only. I'd take to a 'local' repairer for an estimate. They may have some s/h spares for example. It simply wouldn't be economical to repair if you send it to Leica themselves.
